Business travel in Belize

An English-speaking, common-law economy with a pegged currency, where government sits in Belmopan and business in Belize City. Where the work is, what to prepare and how the region connects.

Business travel in Belize has three features that set it apart from the rest of Central America. English is the official language, the legal system is based on common law, and the Belize dollar is pegged to the US dollar. For visitors from North America and the Commonwealth, contracts, meetings and paperwork feel familiar in a way they rarely do elsewhere in the region.

Where the work is

Belize City is the commercial centre: banks, law firms, the main port and most private companies.

Belmopan, about an hour inland, is the capital and the seat of government, where ministries and regulators sit. Meetings with officials usually mean a trip there.

Agriculture — sugar in the north, citrus and bananas further south — and tourism on the coast and islands account for much of the rest.

The south, around Big Creek and Punta Gorda, has its own port and agricultural activity, far from Belize City by road.

What works well

The language. Meetings, contracts and correspondence in English.

The currency. A fixed rate against the US dollar simplifies budgets and invoices.

Scale. It is a small country where decision-makers are often a phone call apart.

What to prepare

Plan the Belmopan leg. Government meetings mean a drive inland; allow time and travel by day.

Check your company's travel policy. Advisory levels differ between governments, and some corporate policies treat Belize City separately because of the district singled out in advisories. AeroRide invoices and charges directly from the site; you receive your receipt in the name of the person or company you give us on confirmation. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

Use organised transport in Belize City, and hotels in established areas rather than improvised bookings.

What goes wrong

Confusing the two airports. The international airport and the municipal airport are 6.6 nautical miles apart, and a regional or domestic connection may leave from either.

Underestimating distances to the south. A visit to Punta Gorda or Big Creek is a long drive; a flight changes it from a two-day trip into a day.

Driving between towns after dark, which advisories specifically discourage.

Belize and the region

Belize is outside the CA-4 area but belongs to both CARICOM, the Caribbean community, and SICA, the Central American integration system. It sits at the junction of two regional blocs, which shapes its trade and its visitors.

For a regional week, Belize connects well. San Pedro Sula is 127.2 nautical miles from the international airport, Guatemala City 218.9 and San Salvador 249.8. Miami, the usual long-haul gateway, is 667.2. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

Each regional hop crosses a real border, with formalities at both ends, which is worth planning rather than assuming.

Where a charter earns its place

Inside Belize, for the south and the islands, where road times are long or there is no road at all.

Regionally, for multi-country weeks, where a morning sector replaces a day of connections through larger hubs.

Not between Belize City and Belmopan, which is an hour's drive.

Before you travel

Who approves the trip, and what documentation procurement needs.

Whether your destination airfields operate at your times, since several regional and domestic strips are daylight only.

And the return leg, built around the international departure rather than the last meeting.
