Cobán and Semuc Champey

Turquoise pools over a limestone bridge, in a valley that no flight reaches. What the journey actually involves, how many days it really needs, and when to leave it out of a short trip.

Semuc Champey is a staircase of turquoise pools on a natural limestone bridge, in the cloud-forest hills of Alta Verapaz. It is one of the most photographed places in Guatemala and one of the hardest to reach, and the second fact is the one that decides whether it belongs in your trip.

What is actually there

The pools themselves, formed where a river runs beneath a limestone bridge and a shallow chain of pools sits on top of it. Park fees and permits are not included in the flight.

A viewpoint above them, reached on a steep climb that is the reason most photographs look the way they do.

Caves and river tubing nearby, usually sold as a package by the lodges in Lanquín.

And Cobán, the regional town: a base with coffee farms, orchid growers and access to the wider Verapaz region rather than an attraction in itself.

Why it is hard to reach

There is no practical airstrip for visitors. Unlike Flores, which serves Tikal at 145.1 nautical miles from Guatemala City, this corner of the country is a road destination and nothing else.

The road from the capital takes most of a day to Cobán, and the final stretch to Lanquín is slower again: steep, winding and part unpaved.

The last kilometres are the slowest, and in the wet months they are the part that occasionally stops people getting through at all.

How many days it really needs

Two nights minimum, and three if you want a day that is not spent travelling.

A day trip from Guatemala City is not realistic. Anyone offering one is selling a bus ride with a short swim in the middle.

Combined with the Petén, it works as an overland leg between the highlands and Flores, but that itinerary is long and needs a week or more to make sense.

When to leave it out

On a trip of five days or less. The travel time eats the trip, and Guatemala has closer places that give more per hour.

In the heaviest rains, when the road is least reliable. We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost.

And if your group includes anyone who struggles with rough roads or steep, slippery climbs, because both are unavoidable here.

How it fits with flying

We do not fly to Semuc Champey, and no honest operator will tell you otherwise.

Where a flight helps is the rest of the itinerary: arriving into Guatemala City or flying on to Flores so the overland days are spent here rather than repeating the same highway.

And on the way out. After two or three days of road, a flight for the next leg is worth more than it would be at the start of the trip.

Practical notes

Take cash. Card acceptance in Lanquín is limited and unreliable.

Travel by day. Advisories discourage night driving in the region, and these roads are a clear example of why. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

And keep the footwear practical. The climb to the viewpoint is the memorable part and the muddy part.

Cash, because card acceptance in Lanquín is limited, and footwear that copes with a steep, muddy climb.
