Surfing Central America: four coasts, four different trips
The eastern Pacific runs on southern swells during the austral winter; the Caribbean runs on a completely separate calendar. Here is what each gives you.
The four, compared
| Coast | Season | Bottom | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Salvador | March–October | Rocky at El Tunco | Proximity — 40 min from the capital |
| Panama Pacific | Austral winter swells | Varies by break | Tide-driven, Arco Seco clear days |
| Costa Rica Nicoya | Year round | Varies | Variety, three airstrips |
| Bocas del Toro | November–March | Reef sections | Caribbean, opposite season |
El Salvador
The country's advantage is proximity
El Tunco is 40 minutes from San Salvador, El Zonte 42 km (26 mi) from the capital.
El Tunco is intermediate to advanced
, over a rocky bottom, with legendary weekend nightlife — though midweek it is a quiet town where you eat three-dollar pupusas at sunset.
Beginners should head to El Zonte or Playa San Diego, with a school.
Season: March through October
, though the coast is surfable year-round.
And the transport trap
buses stop running around sunset.
Panama's Pacific
Tide decides
, more than the swell forecast.
On a rising tide, most Pacific Panamanian breaks improve. On a falling or low tide, performance drops — and where the bottom is exposed, risk rises.
Playa Venao anchors the Azuero corridor
, in the Arco Seco — the strip with the lowest rainfall on Panama's Pacific side, which means more clear days than anywhere else on that coast.
And offshore wind
Panama sits in the trade wind belt, which holds up the wave face and produces a clean surface at certain hours and seasons.
Chitré is 35 minutes from Panama City by air
, against several hours by road — and surf is a morning activity.
Costa Rica's Nicoya
Three airstrips serving three different trips.
Tamarindo — most developed, with the greatest concentration of services. Surf, catamaran, sportfishing and golf.
Nosara — wellness-oriented, with Playa Guiones more consistent and less crowded than Tamarindo.
Punta Islita — the most isolated, with boutique lodging.
The reason to fly between them: the peninsula's roads are dirt in several sections, with conditions that change considerably in the wet season. Ground transfers take substantially longer than maps suggest.
Bocas del Toro
The Caribbean, and the opposite calendar
Surf season runs November through March
— and those are the worst months to dive there, because swell stirs sediment and drops underwater visibility.
Which means Bocas is two trips, not one
The bottom includes reef sections
, so reef booties stop being advisable and become sensible. A coral cut infects easily in tropical climate, and at low tide the break sits closer to the bottom.
Water at 25 to 30 °C (77–86 °F) — a rash guard is for sun and board rash, not warmth.
One access note: commercial flights to Bocas leave from Albrook, not Tocumen, requiring a 30 to 60 minute cross-city transfer and usually an overnight in Panama City.
For beginners, specifically
El Zonte or Playa San Diego in El Salvador, with a school.
Not El Tunco, which is intermediate to advanced over rock.
Not Bocas' reef-bottom breaks at low tide.
And everywhere: being a confident swimmer is a requirement, not a recommendation. In a wipeout over reef bottom, the only thing holding you up is your ability to swim.
Do not assume permanent lifeguard service on any of these coasts.
Rip currents
Narrow, fast flows running from shore out to sea, identifiable as a band of darker, calmer water with foam or sediment moving outward.
If one catches you: do not swim against it. Swim parallel to the shore until you clear the band.
Bringing boards
A charter handles them within aircraft limits, without scheduled operations' special baggage fees.
Declare them when booking so the right aircraft is assigned.
Flight times
El Salvador: Ilopango (ILS) handles general aviation, 30 km (19 mi) from the international airport. The coast is reached by road.
Panama, from Tocumen (PTY): Chitré 35 min · Río Hato 25 · Bocas del Toro 1 h 05
Costa Rica, from San José (SJO): Liberia 35 min, with Tamarindo, Nosara and Punta Islita each having their own airstrip.
Planning surfing Central America
Resolve the fixed points first — permits, caps and any hard window — since those determine your dates rather than the other way around.
Then the season, which in this region decides more than the month suggests.
And keep a day of flexibility if the objective depends on weather, light or tide.
Fly with AeroRide
Tell us the coast, your level and your dates, and we will quote the aircraft that carries your boards.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If your session depends on a tide window or a swell forecast, keep the date flexible and say so.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best surf in Central America?
It depends on the trip. El Salvador for proximity, Panama's Pacific for tide-driven breaks in the Arco Seco's clear days, Nicoya for variety, and Bocas for the Caribbean on the opposite calendar.
Which country is best for beginner surfers?
El Salvador, at El Zonte or Playa San Diego with a school. El Tunco is intermediate to advanced over a rocky bottom, and Bocas has reef sections.
When is surf season?
March through October in El Salvador, austral winter swells on the eastern Pacific generally, and November through March in Bocas del Toro — which is the Caribbean's separate calendar.
Does tide matter?
On Panama's Pacific it is the deciding factor. Rising tide improves most breaks; falling or low tide drops performance and raises risk where the bottom is exposed.
Do you need a wetsuit?
No. Water in Bocas runs 25 to 30 °C. A rash guard is for sun and board rash rather than warmth.
Can you bring boards on a charter?
Yes, within aircraft limits and without scheduled operations' special baggage fees. Declare them when booking.
