Diving and Flying: Why the Last Day Is Not a Dive Day

There is a recommended interval between the last dive and flying. How it shapes the planning of a dive trip in Central America and the Caribbean.

It is the constraint that disrupts most dive plans, and it is neither ours nor negotiable: there is a recommended interval between the last dive and flying. This page explains how to plan around it. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.

What we say and what we do not

We give no figures. The recommended interval is set by your certifying agency and depends on your dive profile, and your instructor at the destination is who should confirm it to you.

What we can tell you is how it changes the shape of a trip, because we see that on every dive booking that comes through us.

The practical consequence, in one sentence

The day you fly is not a full dive day.

It sounds minor and it is not. On a five-day trip, it means you have four days in the water, not five. Anyone planning five ends up cancelling paid dives or delaying the flight.

Count it from the start, not at the end.

Where it bites hardest: island origins

Here is the nuance you only see looking at the whole catalogue.

At a mainland destination, the transfer to the airport is flexible. On an island it is not: the departure flight is the departure flight, and if it also connects to an international one, the whole chain tightens.

Roatán is the clearest case. It is the catalogue's only island origin, and from there San Pedro Sula is 96.1 nautical miles away for the international connection. Adding the interval, the domestic flight and the wait at San Pedro Sula takes the whole day.

Guanaja (36.3 from Roatán, 69.0 from La Ceiba) and Utila (24.0 and 22.3) share the structure with even less margin.

How to plan it well

Book the last dive with a full day in between. It is the simple solution and the one nearly everyone who lives from this recommends.

If your flight is in the afternoon, the previous morning may still be a water morning, but confirm that with your dive centre and not with us.

If you chain domestic and international the same day, allow generous margin. Not because of the interval itself, but because any delay propagates along the whole chain.

Leave the last day for the surface. The catalogue's dive destinations have plenty to offer out of the water, and that is when it pays to use it.

A note on altitude

The interval does not apply only to flying. There are also recommendations about gaining altitude by road, and in Central America that is more common than it seems: climbing from the coast to Costa Rica's Central Valley, or from La Ceiba into the Honduran interior, involves elevation.

If your plan combines diving and mountains on consecutive days, ask your instructor. It is not a flight question, but it falls in the same category.

What we do

Ask about it. If your booking mentions diving, we will confirm the flight time with this interval in mind and tell you whether the plan you bring is tight. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.

We cannot decide for you or replace your instructor. But warning in time nearly always avoids the problem, and the warning is free.
