Guatemala is a good honeymoon and a bad beach holiday, and the couples who are disappointed here are almost always the ones who wanted the second. This is a country you travel through rather than lie down in. Knowing that before you book is the whole thing.
Who should not book it
Anyone whose picture of a honeymoon is a beach. Guatemala's coasts are hot, humid, volcanic-sand and underdeveloped. They are not the reason anyone comes.
And anyone who wants to unpack once and stay put. That is possible here and it wastes the country.
If that is your honeymoon, book Belize or Roatán — and a Guatemala week beforehand is the best possible combination. Belize City is 96,9 nautical miles from Flores.
Where it works
Antigua is the anchor: converted convents with courtyards and fireplaces, restaurants at a level that surprises people, and volcano views at breakfast. The high end here is genuinely good rather than merely comfortable.
Lake Atitlán, specifically the hotels reached only by boat. Santa Cruz and Jaibalito have properties with no road access at all, which is as private as Central America gets without an island.
And a Petén lodge at the Tikal gate, for a couple of nights, if ruins at dawn appeal more than another lake morning.
The shape that works
Four nights Antigua, three at the lake. Two places, one road transfer, no circuit.
Or five Antigua and three Petén, flying the Flores sector at 145,1 nautical miles rather than losing a day each way to the road. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
What does not work is all three in a week. It is a fine holiday and a poor honeymoon, and the difference is entirely in the driving.
What feels like a honeymoon here
Space and atmosphere rather than resort luxury. A colonial suite with a fireplace in a seventeenth-century convent is not a beach cabana, and it is better.
Private boat transfers on the lake, which cost little and change the whole feeling of arriving somewhere.
And the evenings. Antigua at 1,500 metres is cool enough for a fire, which is an unexpected pleasure in a tropical country and the thing couples mention afterwards.
The mistakes
Acatenango. An overnight climb to nearly 4,000 metres with sub-zero temperatures is not a honeymoon activity, whatever the photographs suggest. Pacaya, if you want a volcano.
And a tight last day. Build the departure around the international flight, not the last thing you wanted to see. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
When to go
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. November to April is dry, clear and the volcanoes are visible. This is simply the window.
Semana Santa fills Antigua completely, which is either the most extraordinary week of your life or exactly the wrong one. There is no middle position.
And the wet months are green, cheap and quieter, with afternoon rain you can plan around and mountain roads that occasionally close.
Combining it with a beach
This is the version we would book. A week in Guatemala, then the short international sector to Belize at 96,9 nautical miles from Flores, or to Roatán via San Pedro Sula at 159,8 from the capital.
Culture first, then lying down. It works better in that order than the reverse.
Frequently asked questions
Is Guatemala good for a honeymoon?
Yes, if you travel through it. It is not a beach destination, and couples who wanted one are the ones who leave disappointed.
Where should we stay?
Antigua in a converted convent, and Lake Atitlán at one of the boat-access hotels in Santa Cruz or Jaibalito.
How should we split the week?
Two places, not three. Four nights Antigua and three at the lake, or five and three with the Petén flown.
Should we climb Acatenango?
Not on a honeymoon. It is an overnight to nearly 4,000 metres with sub-zero temperatures. Pacaya is the couple's volcano.
Can we add a beach?
Yes, and we would. Belize is 96,9 nautical miles from Flores, or Roatán via San Pedro Sula at 159,8 from the capital.
When is the best time?
November to April. Semana Santa fills Antigua completely, which is either the point of your trip or the week to avoid.
