From Panama to Cartagena

The only gap in the road from Alaska to Patagonia sits between Panama and Colombia. What that means in practice, and the three ways people actually cross it.

There is one place on earth where the Pan-American Highway stops, and it is here. The Darién Gap breaks the road between Panama and Colombia, so every traveller between the two countries goes by air or by sea.

That single fact shapes the whole corridor.

The three ways people cross

By air, which is what almost everyone does. Panama City to Cartagena is 255,0 nautical miles from Albrook and 243,4 from Tocumen — a short hop by any measure, and the reason the two cities feel closer than the map suggests.

By sailboat through San Blas, the four-to-five day backpacker passage that stops at the Guna Yala islands on the way. It is a genuine experience and it is weather-dependent, small-boat travel in open water.

And overland through the Darién, which you should not do. It is not a route; it is a wilderness with a serious security situation, and the people crossing it are not tourists. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

Why the short distance is misleading

San Blas is the closest Panamanian point to Colombia. Playón Chico to Cartagena is 174,4 nautical miles, eighty less than from the capital.

That proximity is why the sailing route exists and why Guna Yala has always had contact with the Colombian coast. It does not, however, make it a departure point for you: the formalities happen where the formalities happen, and that means a recognised international field.

The formalities, which are the real work

This is an international sector between two countries with their own rules, and both sets change. Check the current position with both authorities or your airline before you plan around it. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.

What consistently matters: clearance at an international field on each side, documentation for everyone on board, and the time those two things take at each end. On a sector this short, the paperwork is longer than the flight.

What Cartagena is for a Panama traveller

A walled colonial city on the Caribbean, larger and grander than Casco Viejo, with an old town that is the obvious comparison and the obvious reason to add it.

The two pair naturally, which is why the corridor exists commercially: two Caribbean colonial quarters, two food scenes, and a short flight between them.

Three nights is the usual add-on, which includes the Rosario Islands if the weather is right.

When it makes sense to fly privately

Groups and awkward timings, as everywhere. The scheduled service on this corridor is established, so the private case is not about access.

It is about the day you lose to a connection and about arriving with a group at a field that is ready for you. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

The season on both ends

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. The Colombian Caribbean and the Panamanian Caribbean share a broad pattern but not a calendar, and Cartagena is drier than Bocas in most months.

December to April is the reliable window on both sides, and it is also when Cartagena is fullest and most expensive. September and October are the quietest and the wettest.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't you drive from Panama to Colombia?

The Darién Gap breaks the Pan-American Highway. Every traveller between the two countries goes by air or by sea.

How far is Cartagena from Panama City?

255,0 nautical miles from Albrook and 243,4 from Tocumen — a short sector, which is why the cities feel close.

What is the sailing route?

A four-to-five day passage through the San Blas islands. A genuine experience, weather-dependent and in small boats.

Is San Blas closer to Colombia?

Yes, 174,4 nautical miles from Playón Chico. That proximity explains the sailing route but not the formalities, which need an international field.

What are the entry formalities?

An international sector with rules on both sides that change. Check with both authorities; on a sector this short the paperwork outlasts the flight.

How long should I add for Cartagena?

Three nights is the usual, which covers the walled city and the Rosario Islands if the weather holds.
