Panama Entry Requirements

The rules that surprise travellers, the ones that vary by nationality, and why the airport you land at changes your first afternoon more than your paperwork does.

Entry rules change, and they change by nationality. None of this replaces checking with the Panamanian authorities or your airline before you travel — what follows is the set of questions worth asking, because travellers usually trip on a rule they did not know existed rather than one they followed badly. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.

The four things that get checked

Your passport. Validity requirements vary by nationality and are the most common reason someone is refused boarding at their departure airport rather than on arrival.

Proof of onward travel. This is the one that catches people. Airlines check it at check-in, because they bear the cost if you are refused entry, so the question often arrives before you have left home.

Where you are staying, at least for the first night.

And proof of funds, which Panama asks about more consistently than its neighbours do. The requirement and the amount are set by immigration and change, so it is worth confirming rather than assuming it will not come up.

The airport question, which is actually about your afternoon

Panama City has two airports and they are not interchangeable.

Tocumen is the international one, east of the city. Albrook is inside the city, 11,8 nautical miles away, and it is where the domestic and regional flights go.

If you land at Tocumen in the afternoon and your onward flight leaves from Albrook, you have a cross-city transfer in traffic between them. That is the connection that goes wrong, and it goes wrong more often than any paperwork does.

Connecting onward the same day

Possible, and it depends on two things almost nobody checks in advance: whether your arrival leaves enough margin, and whether the destination airfield is usable at that hour. Several regional strips are daylight-only.

A late international arrival and a daylight-only destination do not fit together — Bocas del Toro at 161,3 nautical miles and Playón Chico at 81,1 are the ones this matters for most — and it is better known when booking than in the terminal. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Practical basics

Currency. Panama uses the US dollar, which it calls the balboa. That removes a whole category of arrival friction, and it surprises visitors who packed for an exchange.

Cards are widely accepted in the city and unevenly accepted in Guna Yala and the smaller islands, where cash is the practical answer.

Guna Yala has its own administration. The comarca is autonomous, and there are community fees and rules for visitors that are set locally rather than nationally. Ask your operator what applies; it is not something a national guide can answer for you.

Health. Vaccination requirements can depend on where you travelled before arriving, a rule many travellers do not realise applies to them.

What the first day usually looks like

Immigration, bags, customs, and then the part that surprises: the transfer. Tocumen to the city is straightforward but not instant, and city to anywhere else depends entirely on whether you are flying, driving or taking a boat.

If you land late, plan to sleep in the city rather than push on. It is not a rule, it is the most common first-day mistake, and Panama makes it easy to avoid because the city is worth two days anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a complete list of entry rules?

No. Rules change and vary by nationality; check with the authorities and your airline.

What catches travellers most often?

Proof of onward travel, usually checked by the airline at check-in rather than on arrival.

Does Panama ask for proof of funds?

More consistently than its neighbours. The requirement and amount are set by immigration and change, so confirm rather than assume.

Which airport will I use?

Tocumen for international, Albrook for domestic and regional. They are 11,8 nautical miles apart with city traffic in between.

Can I connect onward the same day?

Sometimes. It depends on your arrival margin and whether the destination is daylight-only — several regional strips are.

What currency should I bring?

The US dollar, which Panama uses. Cards work in the city; Guna Yala and the small islands run on cash.
