Charter is priced per aircraft, not per seat
That single difference changes the arithmetic completely — and it is why the comparison against a commercial ticket is usually made wrong.
The pricing
You pay for the aircraft, round trip, for up to five passengers.
Which means the per-person cost falls as the group fills the plane.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers.
Compare that to a scheduled domestic flight: San José to Tortuguero runs $120–150 per person each way, or $240–300 round trip.
What the difference buys
Departure time. This is the real product.
Corcovado's wildlife moves 5:30 to 8:00 a.m., while the park runs 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A pre-dawn landing is the only way to catch the window without overnighting.
Tikal's sunrise tour allows entry from 4:00 a.m., and no commercial flight lands early enough.
El Salvador's volcano parks close entry at 11:00 a.m. sharp, with two hours from the capital.
And Rincón de la Vieja's trails close to entry at noon.
In every case, the charter is not buying speed. It is buying a window.
What eliminates a connection
Commercial flights to Bocas del Toro leave from Albrook (PAC), not Tocumen.
Which means a 30 to 60 minute cross-city transfer, a recommended three-hour buffer, and for most travelers an overnight in Panama City they did not plan on.
A charter from Tocumen removes all three — and that is a night of accommodation, not just an hour.
What to declare when booking
Passenger count and weight, accurately.
Bulky gear — boards, rods, camera equipment, dive kit. A charter handles it within aircraft limits and without scheduled operations' special baggage fees, but the right aircraft has to be assigned.
And your destination airstrip, since at high elevations like Quetzaltenango at roughly 2,371 m (7,780 ft), takeoff distances lengthen and payload limits tighten.
Weather, and who decides
Operations depend on visibility and wind, and the call belongs to the pilot.
A cancellation for weather is professional judgment, not bad luck.
Which is why: plan for date flexibility where the objective is weather-dependent.
And that flexibility is itself a product. Petén morning fog frequently defeats the Tikal sunrise. Río Celeste's colour depends on light and sediment, so overcast or post-rain days lose it. Arenal's cone clouds over through the morning.
With a flexible date, a fogged-out morning becomes tomorrow morning. With a scheduled ticket, it becomes the trip you paid for.
Airstrips that close
RNI, Corn Island, operates 6:00 a.m. to sunset. No night operations.
Which stacks with the panga schedule — only the 16:30 to Little Corn is guaranteed — to create two hard deadlines on the same day.
Confirm operating windows for any night activity with a same-day return, such as bioluminescence in northern Belize, which needs a moonless night.
The dive schedule
Do not dive on your departure day. Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness, and after a deep dive the interval is longer.
A charter lets you set the departure to your surface interval rather than fitting a fixed timetable.
Tell us your dive schedule when booking.
Routings a scheduled ticket cannot do
Land on one shore, depart from the other. Golfito and Puerto Jiménez are both 40 minutes from San José, on opposite sides of Golfo Dulce — so you cross by boat and leave from the far side without repeating a transfer.
Island circuits. Roatán to Utila is roughly ten minutes, against most of a day by ferry and road.
And multi-country routings, since the reef is continuous between Belize and Honduras.
What a charter does not solve
Boat legs. Tortuguero, Caño Island, Livingston, the Corn Islands — the water link remains.
Park caps and permits. Corcovado's 200 a day, Manuel Antonio's 2,000, Poás' hourly slots — book those first; they determine your dates.
And overnight requirements. Tortuguero's turtle nesting happens after dark, and scheduled flights do not operate at night — neither does the airstrip.
Before you book how do charter flights work
Resolve park permits first.
Declare passengers, weight and gear.
Tell us any hard window — a permit time, a tide, a gate closing.
Keep a day of flexibility if the objective is weather-dependent.
And confirm the airstrip's operating hours for anything ending after dark.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a private flight cost per person?
It is priced per aircraft, not per seat, and quoted on request. The per-person cost falls as the group fills the plane.
Is a charter flight worth it?
What a charter buys is departure time — the dawn windows, the 4 a.m. entries and the gates that close at 11.
What happens if weather cancels a charter?
Operations depend on visibility and wind, and the call belongs to the pilot. A cancellation for weather is professional judgment, which is why date flexibility is worth planning for.
What are the baggage limits?
Light aircraft carry weight and volume restrictions, but a charter handles bulky gear without scheduled operations' special fees. Declare boards, rods, camera equipment or dive kit when booking.
Can you fly at night?
Not to every airstrip. RNI on Corn Island operates 6:00 a.m. to sunset with no night operations, so confirm operating windows for anything ending after dark.
What does a charter not solve?
Boat legs, park caps and permits, and overnight requirements like Tortuguero's turtle nesting, which happens after dark.
