Cayo's caves: cave tubing, Barton Creek, and the 40-inch rule

Cave tubing has a government height minimum of about 40 inches. Barton Creek by canoe is the alternative, and ATM is a different thing entirely.

Cave tubing has a government height minimum of about 40 inches, which rules out small children. Cayo has three other cave options with very different demands — and knowing which is which prevents a wasted booking.

Cave tubing

You float through a cave system on an inner tube, following the watercourse that cuts through it.

There is a government height minimum of about 40 inches (102 cm), which in practice excludes small children.

Confirm the measurement before booking if you are traveling with minors.

And being a confident swimmer is a requirement, even though the route is a float.

Barton Creek Cave

Done by canoe, not on foot or floating.

The watercourse runs through the cave, and the boat lets you move through its interior without touching the bottom.

Which makes it the lowest physical demand of Cayo's cave system, and the option when swimming is off the table.

Mountain Pine Ridge

Highland pine forest, with a landscape that breaks completely from the tropical rainforest elsewhere in the country.

Cooler air, different vegetation, and waterfalls inside it.

Confirm access road conditions, particularly in the wet season.

Actun Tunichil Muknal, the strict one

Worth distinguishing from the three above.

ATM holds Maya archaeological remains in situ, which is why its regime is different:

Guide mandatory.

Limited group sizes.

And cameras, phones and devices prohibited since 2012, after incidents of damage to the remains.

What it demands physically: an approach hike with river crossings, and an interior route with stretches where you have to swim.

It is not interchangeable with cave tubing or Barton Creek.

Which to choose

With small children: Barton Creek, by canoe, if the height minimum rules out cave tubing.

For a water activity without demand: cave tubing.

For landscape and waterfalls: Mountain Pine Ridge.

And for archaeology in context: ATM, with the physical demand and strict regime that entails.

Getting there

Belize City (BZE) is the network base, and the Cayo District is reached by road from the capital.

Rest of the network from Belize City:

Destination Distance Flight time
Caye Caulker (CYC) 36 km (22 mi) 10 minutes
San Pedro (SPR) 55 km (34 mi) 15 minutes
Dangriga (DGA) 62 km (39 mi) 15 minutes
Placencia (PLJ) 112 km (70 mi) 25 minutes
Punta Gorda (PND) 168 km (104 mi) 35 minutes

And the charter advantage in Belize is the combination: cave in the morning, reef in the afternoon, with no airstrip more than thirty-five minutes from another.

A day that uses both

06:30 — Depart for the Cayo District 08:30 — Cave tubing or Barton Creek 12:00 — Lunch 13:30 — Mountain Pine Ridge 16:00 — Fly to the cayes, 15 to 30 minutes 17:00 — Reef

What to verify before booking

Height minimum, if traveling with minors, for cave tubing.

Swimming ability required.

Life jackets and safety equipment.

Participants per guide.

Access road conditions in the wet season.

And for ATM: advance booking given limited groups, and confirmation of the current rule on devices.

Before you book

Footwear that can get wet, plus a complete dry change.

Nothing loose — glasses without a cord and pocket items are lost in the water.

Repellent for the approach sections.

And a headlamp if the operator does not supply one.

What else is in the interior

Caracol, the country's largest Maya site. Caracol is far, and it is a full-day commitment.

Xunantunich, with a ferry and a walk of about 45 minutes each way.

And the Cayo District's karst relief, which is what produces the whole cave system in the first place.

From the air

The Cayo District's karst relief, with the cave system perforating it.

Mountain Pine Ridge's pine forest against the surrounding jungle, visible as an abrupt colour change.

And the relationship between interior and coast, with the barrier reef minutes away at the far end.

Official source: current regulations and fees are published by UNESCO.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a height minimum for cave tubing?

Yes, a government minimum of about 40 inches, which in practice excludes small children. Confirm the measurement before booking if you are traveling with minors.

Which Belize cave is easiest?

Barton Creek, done by canoe. The boat moves you through the interior without touching the bottom, making it the lowest physical demand of Cayo's the system system.

What is Mountain Pine Ridge?

Highland pine forest that breaks completely from the tropical rainforest elsewhere in the country, with cooler air, different vegetation and waterfalls.

How is ATM different from the cavern tubing?

ATM holds Maya remains in situ, with a mandatory guide, limited groups and devices prohibited since 2012. It requires an approach hike with river crossings and stretches where you have to swim.

Can you combine caves and reef?

Yes. No Belize airstrip is more than thirty-five minutes from another, so the system in the morning and reef in the afternoon works comfortably.

What should you bring?

Footwear that can get wet plus a complete dry change, nothing loose since glasses and pocket items are lost in the water, repellent for the approach, and a headlamp if the operator does not supply one.
