How many days in Panama? The country fits in a week, with one caveat

How many days in Panama: the whole country is under 1 h 10 by air from Tocumen. The Albrook transfer for Bocas is what adds a night.

The whole country is under 1 hour 10 minutes by air from Tocumen. Panama is compact enough for a week — with one caveat that adds a night to most itineraries.

How many days in Panama: the distances

From Tocumen (PTY):

Destination Distance Flight time
Río Hato (RIH) 113 km (70 mi) 25 minutes
Chitré (CTD) 165 km (103 mi) 35 minutes
Bocas del Toro (BOC) 316 km (196 mi) 1 hour 5 minutes
David (DAV) 344 km (214 mi) 1 hour 10 minutes

Which means: nothing in Panama is more than seventy minutes from the capital.

The caveat

Commercial flights to Bocas leave from Albrook (PAC), not Tocumen.

The transfer runs 30 to 60 minutes across the city, guides recommend a three-hour buffer, and travelers are advised to land by 2 p.m. at the latest to make it the same day.

In practice: most people overnight in Panama City they did not plan on.

A charter from Tocumen removes all three — and that is the difference between a six-day trip and a seven-day one.

Three days

Panama City alone justifies them

Panamá Viejo

— the original settlement, attacked and destroyed in 1671.

Casco Antiguo

— the second city, built after that destruction. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and they sit some distance apart, so plan them as two visits.

And the Canal

, at Pedro Miguel and Gatún. Confirm transit schedules before you go — ships do not pass continuously, and arriving between transits leaves you looking at an empty lock chamber.

One correction worth carrying: the Canal is not on the UNESCO list. Panama's five are the two old towns, Portobelo–San Lorenzo, Darién (1981), Talamanca–La Amistad (1983) and Coiba.

Five days

Adds the Pacific coast.

Río Hato at 25 minutes, with El Valle de Antón 30 km (19 mi) further via highway 71 — a town built inside a volcanic caldera that was a lake for roughly 500,000 years. 18 to 20 °C (64–68 °F) at 588 to 600 m (1,929–1,969 ft), with over 300 bird species.

Or Azuero at 35 minutes, in the Arco Seco — the strip with the lowest rainfall on Panama's Pacific side.

Seven days

Adds Bocas del Toro

Bastimentos Island Marine National Park

, at 132.26 km² (51 sq mi), holding 95% of the coral species in the Panamanian Caribbean. Entry $10 foreign, $4 national.

Water at 25 to 30 °C (77–86 °F)

, visibility usually 10 to 12 metres (33–39 ft).

And a hyperbaric chamber on Isla Colón, ten minutes from Bocas Town — unusually close for an island destination.

One season warning

surf season, November through March, is the worst time to dive there. Diving and surfing are two trips, not one.

The season conflicts to plan around

Bocas: surf November to March, dive the rest of the year.

Azuero festivals: late April, 20 to 22 July with the main day in Las Tablas, and 10 November. Accommodation saturates — which is where 35 minutes of flying lets you attend and return the same day.

And Coiba: the best swell months at Santa Catalina do not coincide with the best underwater visibility.

What needs authorization

Guna Yala — the Guna are autonomous and their authorities decide who enters. Passport required for foreign visitors, a $22 fee collected exclusively by the Guna General Congress, drones need its permission, and photographing faces without consent is prohibited. Executive Decree No. 3 of 31 December 2025, effective 13 January 2026, introduces changes worth verifying.

And Darién — UNESCO since 1981, 575,000 hectares (1.4 million acres), requiring authorization from both the protected area and Emberá, Wounaan and Guna community authorities. No legitimate tourism operation crosses the Darién Gap.

A seven-day air itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive, Casco Antiguo Day 2 — Panamá Viejo and the Canal locks Day 3 — Fly to Río Hato, 25 min. El Valle de Antón Day 4 — Fly to Bocas, direct from Tocumen Day 5 — Bastimentos marine park Day 6 — Cayes and mangrove channels Day 7 — Return, depart

No overnight in Panama City on day 4, which is what the charter buys.

Before you plan

Confirm your Bocas departure airport. It is the difference between arriving today and tomorrow.

Check Canal transit schedules before heading to the locks.

Two visits for the old towns, not one.

Check the Azuero festival calendar for the current year.

And do not dive on your departure day.

Frequently asked questions

Is a week enough for Panama?

More than enough by air — the whole country is under 1 hour 10 minutes from Tocumen. Three days cover the capital, five add the Pacific coast, seven add Bocas del Toro.

How long do you need in Panama City?

Three days. Panamá Viejo and Casco Antiguo sit some distance apart and work as two separate visits, and the Canal locks need a confirmed transit schedule.

Can you do Bocas and the Canal in one trip?

Yes, comfortably. The one obstacle is that commercial flights to Bocas leave from Albrook rather than Tocumen, which usually adds an overnight in the capital.

Is the Panama Canal a UNESCO site?

No. Panama's five are Panamá Viejo and the Historic District, the Portobelo–San Lorenzo fortifications, Darién National Park, the Talamanca–La Amistad Reserve and Coiba.

When should you avoid Bocas for diving?

November through March, which is surf season. The swell that builds the breaks stirs sediment and drops underwater visibility.

What needs authorization in Panama?

Guna Yala, where the Guna are autonomous and require a passport, a $22 fee collected only by the Guna General Congress and permission for drones. And Darién, requiring both protected area and community authorizations.
