Guatemala City to the Caribbean: 40 minutes, or six hours

Río Dulce is 40 minutes by air against roughly six hours combined road and river. Two gateways to Guatemala's Caribbean, serving different sectors.

Guatemala's Caribbean has two air gateways serving different sectors of the same system. Río Dulce at 40 minutes, Puerto Barrios at 50 — against roughly six hours of combined road and river travel from the capital.

The two gateways

Río Dulce / Las Vegas (LCF) — 203 km (126 mi): 40 minutes. Serves the canyon, Castillo de San Felipe, Lake Izabal and the boat to Livingston.

Puerto Barrios (PBR) — 245 km (152 mi): 50 minutes. The other Caribbean access, serving Punta de Manabique — the most isolated point on the Guatemalan Caribbean.

Which one you need depends on the sector.

The Livingston schedule that governs everything

No road reaches Livingston — Guatemala's only Garifuna town.

Boats leave Fronteras at 9:30 and 14:30, at Q125 one way and Q180 return if done the same day. Duration: about 2 hours.

Miss the 14:30 return and you stay the night.

And the crossing runs through the canyon, so the transfer is part of the product rather than a cost.

The canyon

16 km (10 mi) between El Golfete and the sea.

Walls up to 80 m (262 ft) high.

30 to 50 m (98–164 ft) deep, roughly 200 m (656 ft) wide.

It is a navigable karst gorge, with vegetation hanging from the limestone walls.

Guatemala's first protected area

Río Dulce has been protected since 1955 — the country's first.

7,200 hectares within the system, across a total area of 130 km² (50 sq mi).

Habitat for manatee and American crocodile, with around 350 bird species.

On manatees: they are slow and vulnerable to boat strikes. No chasing, no touching, reduced throttle, and the distance your guide sets.

What else is in the system

Castillo de San Felipe — built against the pirates who raided the indigo and cacao convoys, and attacked hundreds of times. Indigo was Central America's great colonial export before coffee displaced it. Entry Q20 foreign visitors, Q10 nationals, Q5 children.

The Río Dulce bridge — 830 m (2,723 ft) long, 45 m (148 ft) high, built between 1977 and 1980, the longest in Guatemala and second longest in Central America.

Lake Izabal — the country's largest, whose brackish-water shrimp are best at the family kitchens beside the castle. 43 km (27 mi) separate it from the Caribbean.

Bocas del Polochic — more than 250 bird species, boat access only, with dawn and the last hours of afternoon as the active windows.

And Finca Paraíso — a thermal waterfall of about 5 metres (16 ft) that mixes with a cold stream, allowing you to move between temperatures. Little visited, unlike the crowded hot springs elsewhere.

The network

From La Aurora (GUA):

Destination Distance Flight time
Quetzaltenango (AAZ) 109 km (68 mi) 25 minutes
Retalhuleu (RER) 126 km (78 mi) 25 minutes
Río Dulce (LCF) 203 km (126 mi) 40 minutes
Puerto Barrios (PBR) 245 km (152 mi) 50 minutes
Flores / Tikal (FRS) 269 km (167 mi) 55 minutes

Which means the Caribbean and the Petén both fit in the same trip — 40 to 55 minutes apart from the capital, against a full day each by road.

A day that fits the schedule

07:00 — Depart Guatemala City 07:40 — Land at Río Dulce 08:30 — Castillo de San Felipe 09:30 — Boat through the canyon 11:30 — Livingston, Garifuna lunch 14:30 — Return boat 17:00 — Departure

The 9:30 and 14:30 boats structure it entirely.

What to eat in Livingston

Tapado — a coconut stew with shrimp and fish, the reference dish.

Coconut bread, from the town's bakeries.

And gifiti — rum macerated with more than 20 roots and herbs, reaching up to 40 ingredients in some preparations.

Several dishes need long preparation. Order ahead at small kitchens, and bring cash, since cards do not always work.
