Tikal is not the Petén's only site, and El Mirador, Guatemala holds the taller structure. La Danta, at El Mirador, reaches 72 meters (236 ft) — two more than Tikal's Temple IV at 70 m (230 ft).
The tallest pyramid, and why almost nobody sees it
La Danta reaches 72 meters.
By volume it is among the largest pyramids in the world, and it sits at a site almost no visitor reaches.
The reason is access:
Expeditions run 5 to 7 days, at roughly $400 to $600.
And air access requires authorization from CONAP and IDAEH.
This is not a day trip. It is a jungle expedition with its own logistics, or a permitted flight — and either has to be resolved before any date is fixed.
Yaxhá: the accessible alternative
Entry: 80 quetzales, roughly $10.
It offers views over twin lakes from its structures, and considerably fewer visitors than Tikal.
Its twin pyramids are the site's architectural signature, and they mark Tikal's political dominance in the Late Classic — that type of complex was built to commemorate period endings under the capital's orbit.
And sunset at Yaxhá pairs well with sunrise at Tikal, with less dependence on fog than the Temple IV viewpoint.
Tikal, for context
A national park since 1955 and a UNESCO mixed World Heritage Site since 1979.
142,000 acres (57,600 hectares), more than 3,000 structures and six monumental pyramid temples.
Temple IV reaches around 70 m.
Entry: Q150 foreign visitors. Hours 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Drones prohibited without a permit.
And it sits 63 km (39 mi) from Flores, with 1.5 to 2 hours of transfer.

Both of the Petén's best light windows in one day, which the commercial schedule cannot deliver.
The conduct that applies
No climbing where it is not permitted.
No touching stelae or reliefs — skin oils accelerate deterioration of carved stone.
No removing fragments. They are heritage.
Pack out your own rubbish.
And follow your guide on structure ascents.
El Mirador Guatemala from the air
The Maya Biosphere Reserve at 8,100 square miles (21,000 km²) — the largest protected tropical area in Mesoamerica.
Temples breaking through the canopy like islands.
And with low-angle morning light, unexcavated mounds under the vegetation — structures that remain buried.
Operational note: airspace over the park is restricted, and clearances are verified with CONAP and IDAEH before the flight.
Before you book
El Mirador needs a 5 to 7 day expedition or CONAP and IDAEH authorization for air access.
Yaxhá costs about $10 and has far fewer visitors.
Tikal sunrise is not guaranteed — Petén morning fog is frequent.
Sturdy shoes, sun protection, plenty of water.
And serious repellent. This is jungle.
Which site fits which trip
A full day with flexible dates: Tikal at sunrise, with the fog risk that implies.
A half day with certainty: Yaxhá, at around $10, with far fewer visitors and less weather dependence.
Both in one day: Tikal at sunrise, Yaxhá at sunset — the Petén's two best light windows, which is the optimal combination.
And a week with real commitment: El Mirador, by expedition or by permitted flight.
