Corn Island is 337 km (209 mi) from Managua
, and two of the three routes only work on certain days. Which one you can use is decided by your calendar, not your budget.
Managua to Corn Island: every route
| Option | Total time | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| Bus to Bluefields + ferry | 8 h bus + 5–8 h ferry | Ferry Wed and Sat only |
| Scheduled flight | ~1 h 15 m | Two carriers, limited seats |
| Private charter | 1 h 10 m | Any day, any hour within the window |
The ferry, and why it often rules itself out
It departs Bluefields Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:00 from the municipal dock.
Duration: 5 to 8 hours. Cost: around $8.
Returns Thursdays and Sundays.
Which means: if your dates do not align with that schedule, the ferry is not an option at all.
And getting to Bluefields is itself 8 hours by bus, for around 380 córdobas on a now fully paved road.
Total on the cheapest route: most of two days each way, with a fixed departure calendar.
The flight window that governs the day
RNI operates 6:00 a.m. to sunset, every day. No night operations.
Its asphalt runway runs 1,900 × 30 m (6,234 × 98 ft), handling Cessna Grand Caravan, Short 360, Let 410, AN-26, ATR-42 and ATR-72, with a control tower on VHF and HF.
Which means any aircraft — scheduled or charter — has to be on the ground before dark.
The second connection, if Little Corn is the destination
Only the 16:30 panga is guaranteed. A 10:00 run happens if enough passengers gather at the dock.
30 to 40 minutes in an open boat, around $10. Taxi from airstrip to dock: 20 to 30 córdobas.
Miss the 16:30 and you sleep on Big Corn.
Two hard deadlines on the same day, which is what makes the arrival hour matter more here than almost anywhere in the network.
Why you need margin
Weather cuts access.
Flights cancel, and in 2017 hurricane-force winds severed all communication with the islands for days.
And if the ferry fills or cancels, no private alternative covers the full route.
Leave one to two days before any international connection. For Little Corn, two — there are two links in the chain, and weather cuts both.
The rest of the network
From Managua (MGA):
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Bluefields (BEF) | 261 km (162 mi) | 55 minutes |
| Bonanza (BZA) | 264 km (164 mi) | 55 minutes |
| Corn Island (RNI) | 337 km (209 mi) | 1 hour 10 minutes |
| Puerto Cabezas / Bilwi (PUZ) | 368 km (229 mi) | 1 hour 15 minutes |
Note that flying direct to Corn Island skips the Bluefields leg and the ferry entirely.
A day that clears both deadlines
07:00 — Depart Managua 08:10 — Land at RNI 09:00 — Taxi to dock, panga to Little Corn 15:00 — Private transfer back to Big Corn 16:45 — Departure before dusk
Lodges on Little Corn arrange private inter-island transfers for guests, which removes the dependence on the public panga schedule.
Before you travel
Cash. ATMs on small islands are limited or nonexistent — bring enough for the stay plus several extra days, since weather cuts access.
Dry bag for the panga crossing. It can be rough with a choppy sea, and water comes in.
Motion sickness medication before boarding.
And what the islands themselves offer — the diving, Little Corn's no-car layout, the Kukra history — is in the Corn Islands article. This page is about getting there.
On travel advisories

Weather cuts access to these islands regularly. A charter with a flexible date is the only way to manage that without putting an international connection at stake.
