The Pearl Cays: eighteen islands, and why light kills turtles

Eighteen cays 35 km from Pearl Lagoon, described as one of the last places you can have a deserted island. And a critical nesting site.

The Pearl Cays are eighteen islands: about 35 km (22 mi) from Pearl Lagoon, described as one of the last places on earth where you can have a deserted island to yourself. They are also a critically endangered hawksbill nesting site — which imposes one rule above all others.

The eighteen cays

Eighteen cays scattered across the blue, with tropical vegetation, white sand beaches and coral reefs.

About 35 km from Pearl Lagoon.

The panga crossing takes 45 to 60 minutes, and can be very rough.

Why light kills

They are a hawksbill turtle nesting site — a critically endangered species.

And here is the mechanism, because the rule makes no sense without it:

Hatchlings emerge from the nest and find the sea by orienting toward moonlight reflected on water.

Any artificial light on the beach draws them inland, where they die.

And nesting females abandon the attempt if they detect light or movement.

The rule: never white light on nesting beaches. Red-filter headlamps only, and only where your guide permits.

No touching, no chasing, no approaching an animal in the act of nesting.

The packages

Around $65 per person.

They require 10 to 15 people to operate.

Including one night with return the following day, around 3 p.m., and meals.

Which means it is a group product. Confirm the departure is running before arranging your air transfer.

There are no services

On remote cays there are no services and no rubbish collection.

Which means:

Plenty of water, more than you think you need.

Cash, withdrawn beforehand — the nearest ATMs are in Kukra Hill or Bluefields, and dollars are accepted only in perfect-condition bills.

A personal first aid kit, including wound supplies: in tropical climate cuts infect easily.

And pack out all rubbish.

Getting to Pearl Cays Nicaragua

Bluefields (BEF) — 261 km (162 mi) from Managua: 55 minutes.

From Bluefields

, panga to Kukra Hill — pangas now only run that far — then taxi to Pearl Lagoon, at around 235 córdobas and about an hour.

And from Pearl Lagoon

, the 45 to 60 minute crossing to the cays.

Which means three links

A charter removes the first, which by road is about 8 hours by bus.

Rest of the network from Managua (MGA)

Destination Distance Flight time
Bonanza (BZA) 264 km (164 mi) 55 minutes
Corn Island (RNI) 337 km (209 mi) 1 hour 10 minutes
Puerto Cabezas (PUZ) 368 km (229 mi) 1 hour 15 minutes

How public pangas work

They leave when they fill, and "full" means full.

Check for life jackets, and if the boat looks overloaded, wait for the next one.

Before you book

Confirm the departure is running — packages need 10 to 15 people.

Long-sleeve rash guard for snorkeling.

Reef-safe sunscreen.

Motion sickness medication before boarding.

Red-filter headlamp, never white light on nesting beaches.

And cash for the whole stay plus extra days.

On travel advisories

Several governments maintain current travel advisories for Nicaragua. Consult your own government's updated advisory before planning.

From the air

The eighteen cays scattered across the blue, with the reef platform visible under the water when the sun is high.

Pearl Lagoon to the west, at 3,876 km² (1,496 sq mi) — Nicaragua's largest coastal lagoon.

And the transition between the lagoon system's shallow water and the open Caribbean, which is what separates a comfortable crossing from a rough one.

Confirming the package before you fly

Departures need 10 to 15 people, which means yours may not run.

Confirm it is confirmed before booking the air leg.

And ask what happens if it cancels — whether there is a refund, a reschedule, or a shorter alternative from Pearl Lagoon.
