Advertising looks like the fast alternative to content that takes months. It is faster and it is not cheaper, and the reason is specific to this category rather than general.
Why the maths is worse than it looks
The click is expensive and the conversion is slow. Private aviation is one of the most contested categories there is, bid on by brokers with national budgets, and a regional operator enters that auction at the same price as they do.
The intent is broad. Somebody searching "private flight Costa Rica" may be planning, pricing a fantasy, or researching for an article. You pay the same for all three.
And the booking is considered. A Drake Bay run at 83.5 nautical miles is not bought on the first visit. The click you paid for is one step in a decision that takes days, and the booking may arrive through a different door entirely — or not be attributed to you at all.
The number that decides it
Not cost per click. Cost per booking won, including the requests that did not fly.
Work it out on a real quarter before spending a second one. Divide total spend by bookings that actually flew, and compare against what the same bookings would have cost you through any other channel. The operator is paid the full flight at their usual rate: our intermediation is not deducted from what they charge.
Most regional operators who do this arithmetic honestly find that advertising costs several times what a distribution channel does, and that the gap is widest exactly where they expected advertising to help — new clients who do not know them.
Where organic wins and why it is slow
A page that answers a specific question ranks for that question and keeps ranking. It costs effort once and attention afterwards, which is the opposite cost shape from advertising.
The problem is the delay. Months, during which fixed costs run and nothing shows. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
That delay is the honest argument for using a channel that already ranks, not an argument against building your own. Over three years your own pages are the cheapest bookings you will ever get.
The three cases where paid is the right call
A single route with real volume and a page that already converts. Paid traffic to a page that works is a different proposition from paid traffic to a homepage.
A short window you cannot wait out. A new aircraft arriving in December and a peak in January is not a situation content can solve in time.
And a corporate or institutional audience reachable by name. That is a narrow, cheap audience compared with route searches, and it is the one case where the auction is not crowded. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
What not to advertise
Your brand name. If somebody is searching for you, you have already won; paying for that click buys a booking you had.
And broad route terms with a thin page behind them. A Tortuguero transfer at 53.4 nautical miles advertised against a page that does not answer what the flight costs, what aircraft, and what happens in weather is money spent sending people somewhere that loses them.
Fix the page before buying traffic to it. That order is not optional and it is the one most often reversed. Operators we bring on evidence current certification, insurance and fleet documentation before receiving a first assignment.
Frequently asked questions
Is advertising cheaper than content?
It is faster and not cheaper. The category is contested, the intent is broad and the booking is considered.
What number decides it?
Cost per booking won, including requests that did not fly — worked out on a real quarter.
Why is organic slow?
Months, during which fixed costs run and nothing shows. That delay argues for using a channel that already ranks.
When is paid the right call?
A single route with volume and a converting page, a short window you cannot wait out, or a corporate audience reachable by name.
Should I bid on my own name?
No. If somebody searches for you, you have already won; that click buys a booking you had.
What comes first, page or traffic?
The page. Buying traffic to a page that does not answer the question sends people somewhere that loses them.
