Santa Teresa and Malpaís: the leg nobody counts

The flight lands at Tambor. What remains is a stretch of road that shapes the schedule and that almost nobody counts when booking.

This destination has an expectations problem, and it is better solved before booking than on the day of travel.

No way of getting there ends in Santa Teresa. Not the flight, not the car, not the ferry. All of them finish with a stretch of road.

What comes after the flight

The flight lands at Tambor, 50.2 nautical miles from San José. From there it is around forty minutes by road to Santa Teresa, partly unpaved and worse in the rain.

It is not included in the fare and we do not operate it. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.

Which means the flight saves you the ferry and the long drive from the Central Valley, but not the final leg. Whoever books believing they land at the beach gets the surprise on the day of travel, and it is an expensive surprise because by then the baggage is already checked in.

Cóbano, the alternative that sometimes exists

There is a field closer to the final destination. We confirm the field’s operating status in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation.

When it operates, it shortens that road leg appreciably. When it does not, Tambor is the entrance and the forty minutes go straight back into the sum. Ask when quoting rather than assuming.

Why the leg matters more than it looks

Because of the surface. Part of the approach is gravel and it degrades in the green season. With an ordinary car and recent rain, those forty minutes stretch. Part of the access road is gravel and its condition worsens in the rainy season.

And because of the village's geography. Santa Teresa is a long strip with accommodation spread over kilometres. They are not all the same distance from the end of the tarmac, and the transfer does not end where the village ends.

If your hotel is in Malpaís or towards Cabo Blanco, add more minutes. Between the northern end of Santa Teresa and the Cabo Blanco reserve there is another good half hour, on the same kind of road.

What decides whether flying pays

Group size and length of stay. With four or more, and three or four nights, the flight justifies itself: two half-days of travel over a short stay is half the trip, and on a long weekend it is most of it.

With two people and a week ahead, the ferry-and-car combination works well and leaves you a vehicle.

In this area that matters: the beaches are kilometres apart, many places to stay sit outside the centre, and whoever arrives by air ends up hiring a quad or a car anyway.

And the return, always. It is the combination almost nobody raises: car on the way out with no rush, flight on the way back with the intercontinental waiting. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

What to ask your accommodation

Whether they collect at Tambor or Cóbano, and whether it is included.

How long to your specific hotel, not to "Santa Teresa".

And whether there is unpaved road beyond the village, which is what gets underestimated most.

Frequently asked questions

Does the flight reach Santa Teresa?

No. It lands at Tambor, 50.2 nautical miles from San José, with around forty minutes of road remaining.

Is that transfer included?

No, and we do not operate it. Your accommodation or a local operator arranges it. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.

Is there no closer field?

Cóbano is closer to the destination. Its availability is worth confirming when quoting. We confirm the field’s operating status in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation.

Does the leg change with the season?

Yes. Part of the approach is gravel and degrades in the green season, which stretches those forty minutes.

Does flying pay?

With four or more people and a short stay, yes. With two and a week, the ferry and car work well.

Where exactly is my hotel?

Worth asking in minutes from Tambor rather than kilometres. The strip is long and not everyone is equally close.

Is there a middle option?

Car out and flight back, with the intercontinental waiting. Almost nobody raises it.
