Most reef news is bad. The Bay Islands National Marine Park is an exception worth understanding. Honduras is one of the few countries in the world where local reef health improves year over year — and the reason is worth understanding before you pay the park fee.
Who actually protects it
The Roatán Marine Park is an NGO formed in January 2005 by dive operators and local businesses, to patrol the Sandy Bay–West End Marine Reserve against unsustainable fishing.
It covers the Sandy Bay and West End strip.
Which means: enforcement in Roatán's most visited sector is funded and run by the industry that depends on it.
The park fee, around $10, pays for that patrol. Pay it without arguing — it is what keeps the reef in the condition that justifies the trip.
What the protection covers
The Bay Islands National Marine Park extends 25 km (15 mi) from each island's coast, totaling roughly 650,000 hectares (1.6 million acres).
It forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which runs about 1,125 km (700 mi) from Mexico to northeastern Nicaragua and is the second longest barrier reef in the world.
And it holds more than 90% of the marine species known in the Caribbean.
Diving conditions
Water: 25 to 28 °C (77–82 °F) year round. No thick wetsuit.
Roatán offers reef and wall diving, with South Water Caye-style outer wall profiles for those with the experience.
On wall diving: there is no bottom reference. The structure falls vertically, and buoyancy control is the determining skill — without a visible floor it is easy to descend without noticing.
And nitrogen narcosis is a factor past a certain depth: it produces euphoria and overconfidence. It is reversible by ascending.
The chamber, and why sector matters
Roatán's only hyperbaric chamber is at Anthony's Key, in Sandy Bay.
A decompression incident on the east coast or at Camp Bay means crossing the island by road.
Before booking a dive center, ask how long that transfer takes from your accommodation.
And confirm your insurance covers diving and medical evacuation — standard policies frequently exclude both.
The conduct that matters
No touching coral. Brief contact kills the polyps.
No standing on the bottom.
Buoyancy control — safety and conservation at once.
No feeding wildlife.
No chasing or touching animals.
No collecting anything, living or dead.
Reef-safe sunscreen.
And no anchoring on coral.
Do not dive on your departure day
Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness.
A charter lets you set the departure time your dive profile requires, rather than fitting a fixed schedule.
And snorkeling is the alternative for the day you fly — same reef, no restriction afterward.
Getting to Bay Islands National Marine Park
From Palmerola (XPL):
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Tegucigalpa (TGU) | 56 km (35 mi) | 15 minutes |
| San Pedro Sula (SAP) | 123 km (76 mi) | 25 minutes |
| La Ceiba (LCE) | 172 km (107 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Utila (UII) | 208 km (129 mi) | 45 minutes |
| Roatán (RTB) | 245 km (152 mi) | 50 minutes |
And the islands connect to each other in minutes, which allows a dive circuit across different profiles rather than a single base.

The other islands
Utila, where whale sharks have no fixed season and diving with them is prohibited by law — snorkel only, under guidelines approved by Honduras's National Congress in 2008.
Cayos Cochinos, a protected area with Garifuna communities living in the archipelago.
And Guanaja, the third of the Bay Islands.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Roatán park fee pay for?
Patrol of the Sandy Bay–West End Marine Reserve against unsustainable fishing, run by the Roatán Marine Park — an NGO formed in January 2005 by dive operators and local businesses. The fee is around $10.
Is the Caribbean reef dying?
Broadly the news is bad, but Honduras is one of the few countries where local reef health improves year over year, sustained by extensive protected area, community management and enforced regulation.
How big is the Bay Islands marine park?
It extends 25 km from each island's coast, totaling roughly 650,000 hectares. It forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second longest barrier reef in the world.
Where is Roatán's hyperbaric chamber?
At Anthony's Key in Sandy Bay, the island's only one. Ask how long the transfer takes from your accommodation before booking a dive center.
What skill matters most for wall diving?
Buoyancy control. There is no bottom reference on a vertical wall, so it is easy to descend without noticing. Nitrogen narcosis is also a factor past a certain depth.
Can you dive on your departure day?
No. Snorkeling is the alternative, since it carries no flight restriction. A charter can also time the departure to your required surface interval.
