Surfing Bocas del Toro: November to March, and why that rules out diving

Bocas surf season runs November to March — exactly the worst months for diving. Reef bottom, board transport and how to plan two trips.

Bocas surf season runs November through March

, and those are precisely the worst months to dive here. The swell that builds the breaks stirs sediment and drops underwater visibility — which means Bocas is two trips, not one.

The season, and the trade-off

November through March concentrates the Panamanian Caribbean's swell.

And those same months are the worst for diving: swell stirs sediment and visibility, which usually runs 10 to 12 meters (33–39 ft), drops.

So:

Surf: November to March. Diving: the rest of the year. They do not combine in the same trip.

Which is where 65 minutes of flying changes the arithmetic. Two short trips to Bocas in opposite seasons is realistic by air. With a full day of road travel each way — the overland route crosses Panama from Pacific to Caribbean — one of the two simply never happens.

The bottom

Bocas' bottom includes reef sections.

Which means reef booties stop being advisable and become sensible. A coral cut in tropical climate infects easily.

And at low tide the risk rises, because the break sits closer to the bottom.

Ask locally which break and which tide suit your level.

The water

It stays between 25 and 30 °C (77–86 °F), with some sources reporting 29 to 30 °C at the surface.

Which means a rash guard for sun and board rash, not for warmth. No wetsuit needed.

Getting to Bocas del Toro surf, and the Albrook problem

Bocas del Toro (BOC) — 316 km (196 mi) from Tocumen: 1 hour 5 minutes.

It is the longest leg in the Panamanian network

, and the one that most justifies a charter.

But there is something more specific

commercial flights to Bocas leave from Albrook (PAC), not Tocumen.

Which means a 30 to 60 minute cross-city transfer

, a recommended three-hour buffer, and for most travelers an overnight in Panama City they did not plan on.

A charter from Tocumen removes all three

And it handles bulky equipment — boards and bags — within aircraft limits, without scheduled operations' special baggage fees. Declare it when booking so the right aircraft is assigned.

The level

The archipelago's breaks have different characters from one another.

For beginners: find a school, and confirm one operates in the zone you are heading to, with instructors and adequate equipment.

And being a confident swimmer is a requirement, not a recommendation: in a wipeout over reef bottom, the only thing holding you up is your ability to swim.

On lifeguards: do not assume permanent service on the archipelago's beaches.

What to do out of the water

Bastimentos Island Marine National Park, at 132.26 km² (51 sq mi), holding 95% of the coral species in the Panamanian Caribbean. Entry $10 foreign, $4 national.

Bastimentos' interior forest.

And the cayes, reached by water taxi.

One seasonal note: in surf months, snorkeling over the reef performs worse for the same reason diving does.

A day on Isla Colón

06:30 — Depart Tocumen 07:35 — Land on Isla Colón 08:00 — First session 12:30 — Lunch in Bocas Town 15:00 — Second session 18:00 — Departure

Two sessions on arrival day. On the commercial route, day one goes to crossing Panama City and waiting at Albrook.

Before you book

November to March for surf.

Reef booties.

Long-sleeve rash guard — more effective than cream for an exposed back.

A first aid kit with wound supplies, because in tropical climate cuts infect fast.

Declare boards when booking the flight.

And ask locally which break suits your level for the day's tide.

From the air

The whole archipelago, with the island layout and the channels between them.

The reef under the water with high sun and calm sea — which in surf season rarely happens.

And the break line marked along the reef edge, visible from above as a continuous band of white water.

Frequently asked questions

When is surf season in Bocas del Toro?

November through March, when the Panamanian Caribbean's swell concentrates. Those are also the worst months for diving, because swell stirs sediment and drops visibility.

Can you surf and dive in the same trip?

Not in the same season. They are opposite windows of the same destination — and with 65 minutes of flying, two short trips are realistic.

Is Bocas good for beginners?

The bottom includes reef sections, which makes booties sensible and raises the risk at low tide. Beginners should find a school and confirm one operates in their zone.

Can you bring a surfboard on a charter?

Yes, within aircraft limits and without scheduled operations' special baggage fees. Declare it when booking so the right aircraft is assigned.

Do flights to Bocas leave from Tocumen?

Commercial ones do not — they leave from Albrook, requiring a 30 to 60 minute cross-city transfer, a three-hour buffer and usually an overnight. A charter from Tocumen removes all three.

Do you need a wetsuit?

No. The water stays between 25 and 30 °C. A rash guard is for sun and board rash, not warmth.
