Hol Chan is a natural channel cut through the barrier reef, 23 meters (75 ft) wide. That geometry is the whole reason it works: water moving through with the tide funnels marine life past a single point.
Hol Chan
A 23-meter channel through the barrier
A marine reserve
, with $5 entry.
Moderate depth
, which makes it work for both snorkeling and recreational diving.
And the tide decides. In a 23-meter channel connecting lagoon to open sea, strong current complicates the passage and changes visibility. A good operator schedules around the tide table, not around convenience.
Shark Ray Alley
About four miles — 6.4 km — south of San Pedro.
The name comes from the concentration of nurse sharks and rays.
Its origin matters: this is where fishermen historically cleaned their catch, and that practice drew animals repeatedly until the aggregation stabilized.
Which means it is a historically induced concentration, not a spontaneous natural phenomenon. Worth knowing before you decide how you feel about it.
Conduct: no feeding, no touching, no chasing, and keep the distance your guide sets.
Which caye to pick
| Caye | Flight from Belize City | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Caye Caulker (CYC) | 10 min, 36 km (22 mi) | Smallest, least developed |
| Ambergris (SPR) | 15 min, 55 km (34 mi) | Largest island, most services |
| Dangriga (DGA) | 15 min, 62 km (39 mi) | Gateway to Cockscomb and central cayes |
| Placencia (PLJ) | 25 min, 112 km (70 mi) | Southern reef, whale sharks |
| Punta Gorda (PND) | 35 min, 168 km (104 mi) | Far south, Garifuna and cacao |
No Belize airstrip is more than 35 minutes from another, which means you do not have to pick one. The cayes work as a circuit.
The reef they all sit on
Belize's barrier reef is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Between the barrier and the coast lies a shallow lagoon, and the cayes are distributed across both.
The conduct that matters
No touching coral. Brief contact kills the polyps.
No standing on the bottom.
No feeding wildlife.
No collecting anything, living or dead.
Reef-safe sunscreen — conventional formulas damage coral.
And anchor only where permitted. On a reef system, an anchor on coral does direct damage.
The sunburn nobody plans for
Snorkeling means an hour or more face-down, back exposed continuously to sun and to reflected light off the water.
A long-sleeve rash guard beats any amount of sunscreen. Cream dilutes; fabric does not.
Snorkeling versus diving, and your flight
Snorkeling carries no restriction on flying afterward.
Diving does — cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness, and you should not dive on your departure day.
Which means: dive the first days, snorkel on the day you fly.
A morning at both sites
08:00 — Depart Belize City 08:15 — Land at San Pedro 09:00 — Hol Chan, on the right tide 11:30 — Shark Ray Alley 14:00 — Lunch in San Pedro 17:00 — Departure
Both sites in a morning, no overnight required.
Hol Chan Marine Reserve from the air
The Hol Chan channel visible as a dark cut across the pale line of the reef.
The barrier running parallel to the coast.
And the contrast between the shallow lagoon on the landward side and the deep blue of the ocean side — which is exactly what the channel connects.
Where the dive centres are
San Pedro concentrates them, which is why Ambergris works as a base rather than a single stop.
Confirm which sites your certification covers before booking, since they range from channel to wall.
And ask about the hyperbaric chamber — the answer should be specific, not vague.
Fly with AeroRide
San Pedro is 15 minutes from Belize City. Tell us your date and passenger count.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If you want more than one caye, tell us the sequence. With every airstrip within 35 minutes of another, Belize is a circuit rather than a single destination.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Hol Chan entry?
$5 per person. It is a marine reserve with its own regulations on permitted activities.
What is Hol Chan?
A natural channel cut through the barrier reef, 23 meters wide. Water moving through with the tide funnels marine life past a single point, which makes the channel a corridor.
Is Shark Ray Alley natural?
It is a historically induced concentration. Fishermen cleaned their catch there, and the practice drew nurse sharks and rays repeatedly until the aggregation stabilized.
Which caye is best in Belize?
Ambergris for services and reef access, Caye Caulker for less development, Placencia for the southern reef and whale sharks, Dangriga to combine reef with rainforest, Punta Gorda for Garifuna culture and cacao.
Can you snorkel the day you fly home?
Yes. Snorkeling carries no flight restriction, unlike diving, after which you should not fly the same day.
Is Belize's reef a World Heritage Site?
Yes, inscribed by UNESCO in 1996. The barrier is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere.
