Here is the thing nobody tells you until you have already booked: commercial flights to Bocas del Toro do not leave from Tocumen. They leave from Albrook (PAC), on the other side of Panama City. That single fact is what turns a short hop into an overnight.
Every route, side by side
| Option | Total time | Cost per person | Same day as your international arrival? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus from Albrook + water taxi | ~10h 30m | $30 + $6 boat | No — overnight bus |
| Bus from David + water taxi | ~4h 30m | Varies | Only if already in Chiriquí |
| Commercial flight from Albrook | 45 min + transfer | Varies | Only if you land before 2 p.m. |
| Private charter from Tocumen | 1h 05m, no transfer | on request | Yes |
The Albrook problem, in detail
Tocumen (PTY) receives the international flights. Albrook (PAC) operates the domestic ones.
Between them: 30 to 60 minutes: across the city, depending on traffic.
And the standard advice from local guides is blunt
— leave a three-hour window between your international landing and your domestic departure, and land by 2 p.m. at the latest if you want to make it the same day.
Which in practice means one thing: most travelers spend a night in Panama City they did not plan on.
A charter departing Tocumen removes all three: no cross-town transfer, no safety window, no hotel night.
What you land into
The airstrip is on Isla Colón, and Bocas Town is where everything is organized from. Internal transport is by water taxi, with the cayes and reef a few minutes out.
The reef you came for
The Bastimentos Island Marine National Park covers 132.26 square kilometers (51 sq mi) and holds 95% of the coral species found in the Panamanian Caribbean.
Entry: $10 for foreign visitors, $4 for nationals
Water stays between 25 and 30 °C (77–86 °F): year round, so no thick wetsuit — the season is decided by visibility, not temperature.
Visibility usually runs 10 to 12 meters (33–39 ft)
, reaching 14 meters (46 ft) on good days.
The season trap most trips fall into
Bocas surf season — November through March — is the worst time to dive here.
Why: the swell that builds the breaks stirs sediment and drops underwater visibility.
So:
Diving? Avoid November to March. Surfing? Those are your months. Both? That is two trips, not one.
And that is where a 65-minute flight changes the math. Two short trips to Bocas in opposite seasons is realistic by air. With a full day of road travel each way — the overland route crosses Panama from Pacific to Caribbean — one of the two products simply never happens.
The hyperbaric chamber
It is on Isla Colón, ten minutes from Bocas Town.
That is unusual for an island destination — assistance is inside the archipelago itself, not hours away by boat or air.
Still, confirm your insurance covers diving and medical evacuation. Standard travel policies frequently exclude both.
Flight times across the Panama network
From Tocumen (PTY):
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Río Hato (RIH) | 113 km (70 mi) | 25 minutes |
| Chitré (CTD) | 165 km (103 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Bocas del Toro (BOC) | 316 km (196 mi) | 1 hour 5 minutes |
| David (DAV) | 344 km (214 mi) | 1 hour 10 minutes |
A day that works because you skipped the transfer
Here is what fits when the connection stops eating the schedule:
07:00 — Depart Tocumen 08:05 — Land on Isla Colón 08:30 — Water taxi to the marine park 09:30 — First dive 13:00 — Second dive 16:00 — Bastimentos interior forest 18:00 — Departure
Two dives on arrival day. On the commercial route, day one is spent crossing Panama City and waiting at Albrook.
One rule that overrides the itinerary: do not dive on your departure day. Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness.
Before you book how to get to Bocas del Toro
Confirm your departure airport. It is the difference between arriving today and arriving tomorrow.
Park entry: $10 foreign, $4 national.
Reef booties for shore entries.
Reef-safe sunscreen — conventional formulas damage coral.
And current certification if diving is on the plan.
