Central America holds the second longest barrier reef in the world and some of the healthiest coral in the hemisphere. It also has wide variation in emergency medical access — and that is what should shape your dive plan more than the sites themselves.
Where the chambers are
Roatán, Honduras — Anthony's Key, in Sandy Bay. The island's only one. A decompression incident on the east coast or at Camp Bay means crossing the island by road.
Bocas del Toro, Panama — on Isla Colón, ten minutes from Bocas Town. Unusually close for an island destination, with assistance inside the archipelago itself.
Everywhere else — ask. Before any dive, in any destination, ask explicitly where the nearest chamber is and how long it takes to reach. The answer should be specific.
The region where you ask harder questions
In Miskito territory, Nicaragua, a commercial lobster diving industry operates that human rights organizations have characterized as an occupational health emergency, after leaving thousands of divers with permanent decompression injuries.
Two consequences:
Commercial lobster diving is not a tourist activity and should not be offered or contracted as one.
And a region where thousands have suffered decompression injuries indicates hyperbaric capacity limited relative to demand.
In that region especially, snorkeling is the sensible alternative: same reef, no decompression risk, no flight restriction afterward.
The flight rule that governs everything
Do not dive on your departure day.
Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness.
And after a deep dive — the Blue Hole's formation zone begins around 33 m (108 ft) — the required surface interval is longer.
Which produces a simple planning rule: dive the first days, snorkel on the day you fly.
A charter helps here specifically: the departure time can be set to your dive profile rather than to a fixed schedule.
Insurance
Standard travel policies frequently exclude diving and medical evacuation.
Confirm both are covered before you leave, not after an incident.
And ask what the dive center carries: emergency oxygen on board is a reasonable question, and the answer tells you a lot.
The main destinations
Belize — the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Hol Chan at $5, Shark Ray Alley, and the Great Blue Hole at 318 × 124 m, whose stalactites at 40 m require deep certification.
Honduras — the Bay Islands on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, holding over 90% of Caribbean marine species, with the park extending 25 km from each island across roughly 650,000 hectares. And Honduras is one of few countries where reef health improves year over year.
Panama — Coiba, one of the few marine World Heritage sites on the planet, with more than 700 fish species recorded. And Bocas del Toro, whose park holds 95% of Panamanian Caribbean coral species.
Costa Rica — Caño Island, with a ten-diver cap and advance booking required before you buy flights.
Wall diving
Several of the region's best sites are walls, and they demand a specific skill.
There is no bottom reference. The structure falls vertically, and buoyancy control is the determining skill — without a visible floor, it is easy to descend without noticing.
Nitrogen narcosis is a factor past a certain depth: euphoria and overconfidence, exactly the wrong combination on a vertical descent. It is reversible by ascending.
Declare your current tolerance honestly to the center.
The season trap
In Bocas del Toro, surf season — November through March — is the worst time to dive, because swell stirs sediment and drops visibility.
In Santa Catalina, Panama, the same tension: the best swell months do not coincide with the best underwater visibility.
Define your objective before setting dates.
Conduct
No touching coral. Brief contact kills the polyps.
No standing on the bottom.
No feeding wildlife.
No collecting anything, living or dead.
Reef-safe sunscreen.
And no anchoring on coral.
Planning diving Central America
Resolve the fixed points first — permits, caps and any hard window — since those determine your dates rather than the other way around.
Then the season, which in this region decides more than the month suggests.
And keep a day of flexibility if the objective depends on weather, light or tide.
Fly with AeroRide
Tell us your destination, your certification level and your dive schedule, and we will time the departure to your surface interval.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If you are diving deep, tell us. We can set the departure to your profile rather than the other way around.

Frequently asked questions
How long after diving can you fly?
Do not dive on your departure day. Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness, and after a deep dive the required surface interval is longer.
Where are the hyperbaric chambers in Central America?
Roatán has one at Anthony's Key in Sandy Bay, and Bocas del Toro has one on Isla Colón ten minutes from town. Elsewhere, ask explicitly before any dive — the answer should be specific.
Is dive insurance necessary?
Standard travel policies frequently exclude diving and medical evacuation. Confirm both are covered before you leave, and ask what emergency oxygen the dive center carries.
Where should you ask harder questions?
In Miskito territory, Nicaragua, where a commercial lobster diving industry has left thousands with permanent decompression injuries — which indicates hyperbaric capacity limited relative to demand.
What skill matters most for wall diving?
Buoyancy control. There is no bottom reference on a vertical wall, so it is easy to descend without noticing. Nitrogen narcosis is also a factor past a certain depth, though reversible by ascending.
When is the worst time to dive in Bocas del Toro?
November through March, which is surf season. The swell that builds the breaks stirs sediment and drops underwater visibility.
