Corcovado is routinely called the most biologically intense place on Earth. What the brochures skip is that the park's opening hours exclude both windows when animals actually move. Here is the problem, and the two ways around it.
The timing trap
Wildlife activity concentrates from 5:30 to 8:00 a.m. and from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The park operates 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m
Read those two lines again
Anyone entering and leaving the same day misses both windows entirely, and spends their visit in the midday heat when sightings drop sharply.
Two ways out
Overnight at Sirena
, the ranger station inside the park.
Or land before dawn and work the unregulated forest outside the boundary, then enter when the gate opens.
Getting to how to get to Corcovado
| Route | Time from San José | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Drive to Sierpe + boat to Drake | Full day | 4WD required, river crossings |
| Drive to Puerto Jiménez | Full day | Long, rough sections |
| Scheduled domestic flight | ~1h + transfer | Fixed morning schedule |
| Private charter | 30–40 min | Pre-dawn departure possible |
Four airstrips serve the peninsula from different angles:
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Drake (DRK) | 155 km (96 mi) | 30 minutes |
| Puerto Jiménez (PJM) | 191 km (119 mi) | 40 minutes |
| Golfito (GLF) | 187 km (116 mi) | 40 minutes |
| Palmar Sur (PMZ) — the northern approach |
Which one you need depends on the park sector you reserved. Confirm that before booking flights.
The permit, and why it comes first
Daily cap: 200 people.
Certified guide mandatory.
Advance reservation required — and it should be resolved before you buy flights or book lodging, not after.
The ranger stations are Sirena, Los Patos, San Pedrillo and La Leona, linked by maintained trails.
One seasonal closure: the San Pedrillo–Sirena trail closes from 1 May to 1 December.
Why Osa has this much wildlife
Two geological reasons, and they explain everything else.
Age. The peninsula's relief is basalt between 50 and 65 million years old. That depth of time let diversity accumulate without the interruptions younger terrain suffered.
And rain. 4,000 to 5,000 mm (157–197 in) annually sustains a rainforest of extraordinary productivity.
Old substrate plus abundant water is what produces the density Corcovado is famous for.
What you see
Primates, with the species of Costa Rica's southern Pacific.
Large mammals — the thing that separates Corcovado from every other park in the country.
Birdlife that ranks the peninsula among Central America's reference destinations.
And an honest note: sightings are not guaranteed, and in closed forest much of what you perceive is auditory. A good guide is not optional here.
The day the schedule cannot deliver
05:00 — Depart San José 05:40 — Land at Puerto Jiménez 06:00 — Dawn window, wildlife outside the park boundary 08:00 — Corcovado entry with your guide 15:00 — Sector closes 16:00 — Afternoon window 18:30 — Departure
Both activity windows plus the park, in one day. That is precisely what the 8-to-3 schedule denies anyone arriving by road.
What to bring
Repellent and rain gear. At 4,000–5,000 mm annually, both are mandatory, not optional.
Hiking boots with real grip.
Binoculars — in closed forest they are the difference.
Neutral colors, no fragrance.
And a headlamp for pre-dawn departures.
What the guide requirement means in practice
Certified guides book out in high season, alongside the 200-person cap.
Book the guide with the permit, not after.
And confirm which station your guide operates from, since that determines the airstrip.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a guide for Corcovado?
Yes, a certified guide is mandatory, along with an advance reservation. The park caps daily entry at 200 people and operates 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
How far in advance should I book Corcovado?
Before you buy flights or book lodging. With a 200-person daily cap, the permit determines your dates — not the other way around.
What is the best time of day for wildlife in Corcovado?
Dawn, from 5:30 to 8:00 a.m., and late afternoon, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The park's 8-to-3 schedule excludes both, which is why visitors either overnight at Sirena or land before dawn.
How do you get to Corcovado from San José?
By air in 30 to 40 minutes to Drake, Puerto Jiménez or Golfito, depending on your sector. By road it is a full day, with 4WD needed and rivers to cross on some approaches.
Why does Osa have so much wildlife?
Two reasons: relief formed of basalt 50 to 65 million years old, which allowed diversity to accumulate uninterrupted, and 4,000 to 5,000 mm of annual rainfall sustaining a highly productive forest.
Are any trails closed seasonally?
Yes. The San Pedrillo–Sirena trail closes from 1 May to 1 December.
