Costa Rica has two fisheries that share almost nothing. The Pacific runs billfish offshore and sheltered water inside a tropical fjord. The Caribbean runs tarpon in wetland with no road access at all.
The Pacific
Guanacaste — offshore billfish, with catch and release standard in the eastern Pacific. Mornings are typically calmer, which matters for both comfort and the operating window.
And Papagayo winds affect the northern coast in season — the same wind that makes kitesurfing excellent at Bahía Salinas.
Golfo Dulce — this is the unusual one. It is one of only four tropical fjords on Earth, 50 km long by 10 to 15 km wide (31 × 6–9 mi) with 215 m (705 ft) maximum depth.
Which means sheltered water inside and open Pacific outside — two profiles from one base.
Inside: comfortable navigation, little seasickness, a wide operating window. The option for anyone who does not tolerate open ocean.
Outside: substantial navigation, a full day, an early start.
The Caribbean
Barra del Colorado — tarpon fished here since 1950, in a wetland system at the far north, with no road access.
Two seasons across the year, following the species' movement cycles and the system's conditions, which shift with rainfall and river flow.
Ask for recent reports, not general calendars — each year's flow shifts the windows.
And why the fish is there: tarpon can breathe atmospheric air through a modified swim bladder, which lets it inhabit low-oxygen water. Those are exactly the conditions of a wetland lagoon.
Catch and release
It is the standard for billfish in the eastern Pacific, and what sustains the Caribbean tarpon fishery.
Keep the fight short. Accumulated lactic acid is the main cause of post-release mortality.
Do not lift the fish from the water longer than necessary.
Wet hands for any contact — dry skin strips the mucus layer that protects the fish from infection.
Circle or barbless hooks where possible.
Revive before release, holding the fish facing the current until it swims off under its own power.
And recover every piece of line. Lost monofilament keeps fishing on its own for years.
Which coast, for what
Billfish and open-ocean days: Guanacaste or outside Golfo Dulce.
Comfortable water and no seasickness: inside Golfo Dulce.
Tarpon and wetland: Barra del Colorado, on the Caribbean.
They are different trips, different gear and different calendars.
Getting to sportfishing Costa Rica
From San José (SJO):
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Liberia (LIR) | 161 km (100 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Golfito (GLF) | 187 km (116 mi) | 40 minutes |
| Puerto Jiménez (PJM) | 191 km (119 mi) | 40 minutes |
| Limón (LIO) | 130 km (81 mi) | 25 minutes |
And Barra del Colorado has no direct land access — it is by air or by water, with internal movement by boat.
For a day departing at dawn, those minutes are what save the night before.
What to verify before booking
Where exactly you will fish.
Current permits and licences, and whether an individual licence is required.
Catch and release policy and whether they use circle or barbless hooks.
Vessel condition and suitability for the expected water.
Life jackets and safety equipment.
Radio communication with shore, not just a phone.
Cancellation criteria for sea state — professional judgment rather than bad luck.
And what insurance covers the activity.
If you get seasick
Take the medication before departure, not once symptoms start.
Sit amidships.
Watch the horizon.
And consider the sheltered option — inside Golfo Dulce does not produce the movement of the open Pacific, which is exactly why that coast has two profiles.
A full day on the water
05:30 — Depart San José 06:10 — Land at the coast 07:00 — Cast off 15:00 — Return to port 18:00 — Departure home
A full fishing day without overnighting.
What to bring
Motion sickness medication before boarding.
High-factor sun protection, a hat with a retention cord, polarized glasses.
A light jacket — with swell and wind, apparent temperature drops.
Fishing gloves if you will handle large fish.
And serious repellent if the destination is Caribbean wetland.

Tell us your target species, your dates and your passenger count, and we will quote the right aircraft to the right airstrip.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If you are targeting a specific run, keep the date flexible. Fish move with water temperature and river flow, and a fixed ticket cannot follow them.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best fishing in Costa Rica?
It depends on the target. Guanacaste and outside Golfo Dulce for billfish, inside Golfo Dulce for sheltered water, and Barra del Colorado on the Caribbean for tarpon.
What is the difference between Pacific and Caribbean fishing?
The Pacific runs billfish offshore, with catch and release standard, plus sheltered water inside Golfo Dulce. The Caribbean runs tarpon in wetland with no road access and two seasons a year.
When is tarpon season?
Barra del Colorado has two seasons across the year, following the species' movement cycles and the system's conditions. Ask for recent reports rather than general calendars, since each year's flow shifts the windows.
Why is Golfo Dulce unusual?
It is one of only four tropical fjords on Earth, which gives sheltered water inside and open Pacific outside — two fishing profiles from a single base.
What is catch and release?
The standard for billfish in the eastern Pacific. Keep the fight short, minimize time out of the water, use wet hands for contact, circle or barbless hooks, and revive facing the current before release.
What if you get seasick?
Take medication before departure, sit amidships and watch the horizon. And consider fishing inside Golfo Dulce, which does not produce the movement of the open Pacific.
