How to get to the Corn Islands: the two connections that can strand you

How to get to the Corn Islands: the airstrip closes at dusk and only one panga to Little Corn is guaranteed. Every route, and the margin to leave.

Two things about the Corn Islands nobody puts in the brochure: the airstrip does not operate after dusk, and only one boat to Little Corn is guaranteed each day. Get either wrong and you lose a day.

Every route from Managua

Option Time Cost per person Reliability
Bus to Bluefields + ferry 8h bus + 5–8h ferry ~$8 ferry + bus Ferry runs Wed and Sat only
Scheduled flight ~1h 15m Varies Two carriers, limited seats
Private charter 1h 10m on request Date flexible

Then, if Little Corn is the destination, a second connection:

The panga from Big Corn. Guaranteed departure: 16:30. A possible second at 10:00 if enough passengers gather at the dock. 30 to 40 minutes in an open boat, around $10.

Taxi from airstrip to dock: 20 to 30 córdobas.

Miss the 16:30 and you sleep on Big Corn.

The airstrip that closes at dusk

RNI operates 6:00 a.m. to sunset, every day. No night operations.

Asphalt runway, 1,900 × 30 m (6,234 × 98 ft), in fair condition.

It handles Cessna Grand Caravan, Short 360, Let 410, AN-26, ATR-42 and ATR-72, with a control tower equipped with VHF and HF radio.

Any aircraft has to be on the ground before dark. Combined with the 16:30 panga, that stacks two hard deadlines on the same day.

Why you need margin

Weather cuts access here.

Flights cancel, and in 2017 hurricane-force winds severed all communication with the islands for days.

And if the Bluefields ferry fills or cancels, there is no private alternative covering the full route.

Leave one to two days of margin before any international connection. For Little Corn, two — because there are two links, not one.

The islands

Big Corn simplifies logistics: it has roads and taxis.

Little Corn has no cars at all. You walk. Lighting is limited, so a headlamp is a necessary item rather than an optional one.

And divers report Little Corn is the better of the two underwater. Dive packages run around $430 for two people, covering three nights and two dives daily including accommodation.

Declared a Protected Land and Marine Landscape on 13 October 2021.

The history most guides skip

Ethnologist Edward Conzemius documented in 1929 that the first inhabitants were the Kukra, exterminated by Miskito allied with English buccaneers.

The islands served those buccaneers as a resupply point for wood and water, and for repairing vessels.

That is where the Afro-Caribbean and English heritage comes from — Creole is still in everyday use alongside Spanish.

Diving and your flight home

Do not dive on your departure day.

Snorkeling is the alternative — same reef, no flight restriction afterward.

And ask where the nearest hyperbaric chamber is and how long it takes to reach. This is a remote island with an airstrip that closes at dusk.

Nicaragua network flight times

From Managua (MGA):

Destination Distance Flight time
Bluefields (BEF) 261 km (162 mi) 55 minutes
Bonanza (BZA) 264 km (164 mi) 55 minutes
Corn Island (RNI) 337 km (209 mi) 1 hour 10 minutes
Puerto Cabezas / Bilwi (PUZ) 368 km (229 mi) 1 hour 15 minutes

A day that clears both deadlines

07:00 — Depart Managua 08:10 — Land at RNI 09:00 — Taxi to dock, panga to Little Corn 10:00 — Snorkel the reef 15:00 — Private transfer back to Big Corn 16:45 — Departure before dusk

Lodges on Little Corn arrange private inter-island transfers for guests, which removes the dependence on the public panga schedule entirely.

Before you book how to get to Corn Islands

Cash. ATMs on small islands are limited or nonexistent — bring enough for the stay plus several extra days.

Dry bag for the panga crossing. It can be rough with a choppy sea, and water comes in.

Motion sickness medication before boarding, not after symptoms start.

And two days of margin before an international flight.

Weather cuts access to these islands regularly. A charter with a flexible date is the only way to manage that risk without putting an international connection at stake.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Little Corn Island?

By panga from Big Corn. Only the 16:30 departure is guaranteed; a 10:00 run happens if enough passengers gather. The crossing takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs around $10.

Is there a ferry to Corn Island?

Yes, from Bluefields on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:00, taking five to eight hours for around $8. It returns Thursdays and Sundays.

What are the airport hours on Corn Island?

RNI operates from 6:00 a.m. until sunset, with no night operations. Any aircraft must land before dark.

How many days of margin should I leave?

One to two before any international connection, and two if Little Corn is involved — there are two links in that chain, and weather cuts both.

Are there cars on Little Corn?

No. The island is crossed on foot in under an hour, and lighting is limited, so bring a headlamp.

Can you dive the day you fly out?

No. Snorkeling is the alternative, since it carries no flight restriction. Ask where the nearest hyperbaric chamber is before any dive here.
