There is no single best month to visit Central America
, because the region's seasons work against each other. The month that is best for surfing is the worst for diving. Here are the trade-offs that decide your dates.
Surf versus dive
In Bocas del Toro, surf season runs November through March — and those are the worst months to dive there, because the swell that builds the breaks stirs sediment and drops underwater visibility.
Visibility normally runs 10 to 12 metres (33–39 ft), reaching 14 (46 ft) on good days. In surf season it falls.
In Santa Catalina, Panama, the same tension: the best swell months do not coincide with the best underwater visibility.
Which means: they are two trips, not one. And with 65 minutes of flying, two short trips in opposite seasons is realistic where a full day of road travel each way would make one of them never happen.
On the Pacific: the eastern Pacific receives southern swells during the austral winter, which is the region's biggest period.
Dry versus wet
Dry season gives firm access roads, less morning fog and easier jungle movement. In Bosawás, mud can double movement times, and the constant river crossings rise with rain, which can leave an expedition stuck.
Wet season is when forest wildlife is most active — but secondary roads get difficult and afternoon cloud is frequent, which is why air movements are planned for the morning.
And in Osa, rainfall runs 4,000 to 5,000 mm (157–197 in) annually regardless — repellent and rain gear are mandatory, not seasonal.
The wildlife windows that ignore the calendar
These are daily, not seasonal, and they matter more than the month.
Corcovado's wildlife moves 5:30 to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. — while the park operates 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., excluding both.
Tortuguero's canals perform at dawn.
Arenal's cone is clearest early, with cloud building through the morning.
And El Boquerón's crater view closes as cloud accumulates through the day.
The fixed seasons
Green turtle nesting at Tortuguero: 1 March to 31 October. After dark, guide mandatory, groups capped at 11, flash prohibited.
San Pedrillo–Sirena trail at Corcovado: closed 1 May to 1 December.
And Azuero's festivals: late April for the Feria Internacional, 20 to 22 July for Santa Librada with 22 July in Las Tablas, and 10 November for the Grito de La Villa — periods when accommodation saturates.
The seasons that are not seasons
Whale sharks in Utila have no fixed season, unlike most destinations worldwide.
At Gladden Spit in Belize they do not either — presence tracks snapper spawning, which follows lunar phase within specific months.
And bioluminescence in northern Belize depends on the moon, not the month: it works on moonless nights, and moonlight cancels it entirely.
Costa Rica's two whale seasons
The southern Pacific receives humpback populations from both hemispheres, each arriving in its own winter.
Which gives two separate windows across the year, with a quieter stretch between.
Ask your operator which one matches your dates.
What is unaffected by season
Water temperature. Bay Islands 25 to 28 °C (77–82 °F), Bocas 25 to 30 °C (77–86 °F) — no thick wetsuit, year round.
Which means the season is decided by visibility, not temperature.
And Azuero's Arco Seco — the strip with the lowest rainfall on Panama's Pacific side — gives more clear days than anywhere else on that coast.
How to actually decide
Pick the activity first. Diving, surfing, wildlife, ruins or culture each point to different months.
Then check the daily window, which usually matters more than the month.
Then book the caps and permits, since Corcovado's 200, Manuel Antonio's 2,000 and Poás' hourly slots determine your dates.
And keep a day of flexibility for anything weather-dependent — the Tikal sunrise, Río Celeste's colour, Arenal's cone.
Planning when to visit Central America
Resolve the fixed points first — permits, caps and any hard window — since those determine your dates rather than the other way around.
Then the season, which in this region decides more than the month suggests.
And keep a day of flexibility if the objective depends on weather, light or tide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Central America?
There is no single one, because the seasons contradict each other. Surf season is the worst diving season, and dry season gives easier access but less wildlife activity than wet.
When is surf season?
In Bocas del Toro, November through March. On the Pacific, the eastern Pacific receives southern swells during the austral winter, which is the region's biggest period.
Does dry season mean better wildlife?
Not necessarily. Dry gives firmer access and less fog; wet is when forest wildlife is most active, though secondary roads get difficult and afternoon cloud is frequent.
When is turtle nesting?
Green turtle nesting at Tortuguero runs 1 March to 31 October, after dark, with a mandatory guide, groups capped at 11 and flash prohibited.
When can you see whale sharks?
Utila has no fixed season, unlike most destinations. Gladden Spit in Belize tracks snapper spawning, which follows lunar phase within specific months.
Do you need a wetsuit?
No. Water runs 25 to 28 °C in the Bay Islands and 25 to 30 °C in Bocas, year round. The season is decided by visibility, not temperature.
