Lake Izabal is Guatemala's largest
, and it drains to the Caribbean through the Río Dulce canyon. Its surroundings hold three things almost nobody visits: brackish-water shrimp, a thermal waterfall, and the country's most isolated Caribbean point.
The lake
Guatemala's largest.
Its brackish-water shrimp are the characteristic product, and the best are at the family kitchens beside Castillo de San Felipe.
The castle was built against the pirates raiding the indigo and cacao convoys, and was attacked hundreds of times. Entry: Q20 foreign visitors, Q10 nationals.
Finca Paraíso
This is the area's least-known attraction.
A thermal waterfall of about 5 meters (16 ft) that mixes with a cold stream.
Which means hot water falling onto cold, with the option of moving between temperatures.
And it is little visited, which distinguishes it from the crowded hot springs elsewhere in the region.
Bocas del Polochic
More than 250 bird species, with boat access only.
Timing: dawn and the last hours of afternoon concentrate activity.
And the river approach is the only one, which requires coordinating with an operator.
Punta de Manabique
Reached from Puerto Barrios, at 50 minutes by air from Guatemala City.
It is the far corner of the Guatemalan Caribbean, with beach and mangrove.
The most isolated point on the country's Caribbean coast — confirm access and conditions with your operator.
The whole system
43 km (27 mi) separate Guatemala's largest lake from the Caribbean, crossing the Río Dulce canyon — 16 km (10 mi) between El Golfete and the sea, with walls up to 80 m (262 ft).
Río Dulce has been protected since 1955, making it Guatemala's first protected area, with manatee and American crocodile habitat and around 350 bird species.
And the Río Dulce bridge, at 830 m (2,723 ft) long and 45 m (148 ft) high, built between 1977 and 1980, is the longest in Guatemala.
Livingston, in the same system
Guatemala's only Garifuna town, and accessible only by boat.
Boats from Fronteras at 9:30 and 14:30, at Q125 one way and Q180 return the same day, taking about 2 hours.
Miss the 14:30 and you stay the night.
Getting to Lake Izabal Guatemala
Río Dulce / Las Vegas (LCF) — 203 km (126 mi) from Guatemala City: 40 minutes.
Puerto Barrios (PBR) — 245 km (152 mi): 50 minutes.
These are the two gateways to the Guatemalan Caribbean, serving different sectors of the system.
Rest of the network from La Aurora (GUA):
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Quetzaltenango (AAZ) | 109 km (68 mi) | 25 minutes |
| Retalhuleu (RER) | 126 km (78 mi) | 25 minutes |
| Flores / Tikal (FRS) | 269 km (167 mi) | 55 minutes |
A day across the system
06:00 — Depart La Aurora 06:40 — Land at Río Dulce 07:30 — Bocas del Polochic at first light 11:00 — Castillo de San Felipe and lunch 14:00 — Finca Paraíso 17:30 — Departure
Birds, castle and thermal waterfall in a day — the dawn window being what road travel from the capital cannot deliver.
Before you book
Confirm boat times if Livingston is on the itinerary.
Life jackets for any water activity.
Serious repellent.
Binoculars, with more than 250 species at Bocas del Polochic and around 350 in the Río Dulce system.
And reduced throttle in manatee areas — they are slow and vulnerable to boat strikes.
From the air
The 43 km between lake and Caribbean, crossing the canyon with its 80-metre walls.
The Río Dulce bridge, at 830 m long and 45 m high, spanning the system's mouth.
And Bocas del Polochic to the west, with the wetland that concentrates the birdlife.
