Little Corn Island, Nicaragua has no cars
You walk. And it has one guaranteed boat a day, at 16:30 — which is the constraint the whole trip is built around.
The panga
Guaranteed departure: 16:30.
A possible second at 10:00, if enough people are waiting at the dock.
Duration: 30 to 40 minutes in an open boat.
Price: around $10.
And from the airstrip to the dock: taxi for 20 to 30 córdobas.
Which means: anyone arriving after 16:30 does not cross that day. It is the fact that orders the entire itinerary.
The crossing
It can be rough with a choppy sea.
It is an open boat on open water: with swell, water comes in and luggage gets wet.
Motion sickness medication before boarding, and a dry bag for gear.
And Little Corn's lodges arrange private inter-island transfers for guests — which removes the dependence on the public schedule entirely.
The island itself
No cars. No roads. Movement is on foot along sand paths.
Lighting is limited, which makes a headlamp a necessary item rather than an optional one.
Services are those of a small island: bring what you will need, including a personal first aid kit and enough cash.
And divers report Little Corn is the better of the two underwater.
Dive packages run around $430 for two people, covering three nights and two dives daily including accommodation.
The airstrip that closes at dusk
RNI operates 6:00 a.m. to sunset, every day. No night operations.
Asphalt runway, 1,900 × 30 m (6,234 × 98 ft).
Which means any aircraft has to land before dark — and combined with the 16:30 panga, that stacks two hard deadlines on the same day.
And the island was declared a Protected Land and Marine Landscape on 13 October 2021.
Why you need two days of margin
Weather cuts access here.
Flights cancel, and in 2017 hurricane-force winds severed all communication with the islands for days.
And if the Bluefields ferry fills or cancels, no private alternative covers the full route.
Leave one to two days before any international connection. For Little Corn, two — because there are two links in the chain, and weather cuts both.
Diving and your flight
Do not dive on your departure day.
Snorkeling is the alternative — same reef, no flight restriction afterward.
And ask where the nearest hyperbaric chamber is and how long it takes. This is a remote island with an airstrip that closes at dusk.

The history
Ethnologist Edward Conzemius documented in 1929 that the first inhabitants were the Kukra, exterminated by Miskito allied with English buccaneers.
The islands served those buccaneers as a resupply point for wood and water, and for repairing vessels.
That is where the Afro-Caribbean and English heritage comes from — Creole remains in everyday use alongside Spanish.
