Manuel Antonio National Park: the daily cap, the no-reentry rule and the guides to avoid

Manuel Antonio National Park caps entry at 2,000 a day, sells online only and allows no reentry. Plus the warning about guides at the gate.

Three rules decide whether your Manuel Antonio day works: a 2,000-person daily cap, online-only tickets, and no reentry. Plus one warning that local sources give bluntly.

The warning about the gate

Local guidance is direct: do not use the so-called "guides" near the entrance.

Most are scammers who dress as park rangers or guides

, and sell parking and guided visits at inflated prices.

What to do instead

book a certified guide online in advance. Private tours run year-round at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., though they may be unavailable at Christmas, New Year and Easter week.

The cap and the tickets

Daily limit: 2,000 visitors.

Tickets are sold only through the official SINAC platform. There is no gate window.

In high season — public holidays, weekends and school vacations — they sell out fast. Sources recommend booking two to three weeks ahead in those periods, with alternative dates ready.

No reentry

Your ticket is valid for one entry only.

Leave the park and it stops being valid. You buy another to return.

Which means: plan the day as a single block. The public beach outside the park covers the rest of your time in the area.

Getting to Manuel Antonio National Park

Option From San José Notes
Direct bus ~4h 6:00 and 9:00 departures, ~$8.50
Rental car 3–3.5h Parking is where the touts operate
Private charter to Quepos ~30 minutes Land inside your entry window

From the bus stop it is a 10-minute walk to the park entrance.

Why the timing matters

Wildlife concentrates in the early hours, before the midday heat and before the day's 2,000 visitors are inside.

An 8:00 a.m. entry is a different park than a 1:00 p.m. entry — and with no reentry, you only get one attempt.

What else Quepos offers

Whale watching, in the seasons of Costa Rica's Pacific.

Offshore sportfishing.

Catamaran trips along the coast.

And scenic flights over the Osa Peninsula, 30 minutes south.

From the air

The forest strip running down to the water

, with the park reaching the sea — an unusual configuration on this coast.

Punta Catedral

, the headland joined to the mainland by a sand isthmus. You can walk it, but you cannot see it whole from the ground.

And the Osa Peninsula: to the south, with the Corcovado massif.

Costa Rica network flight times

Before you book

Buy tickets online, in advance

Everything else depends on it.

Book a guide online

, never at the gate.

No reentry

— plan the full day inside.

Sun protection, repellent and water.

And park as close to the entrance as possible, avoiding anyone offering parking along the road.

Planning around the single entry

No reentry means the day is one block.

Bring water and food rather than planning to leave and return.

Sun protection, since the trails open onto exposed beach sections.

And a dry bag if the plan includes the water.
