Rincón de la Vieja National Park: the noon trail closure that catches most visitors

Rincón de la Vieja National Park closes waterfall trails to entry at noon, and tickets are online-only. What that means for a day trip.

At Rincón de la Vieja National Park, entry to the waterfall trails closes at 12:00 noon, and tickets have been online-only since 1 August 2023. Two rules that end a lot of Guanacaste day trips before they start.

What changed, and what it means

No tickets are sold at the gate

Purchase happens through SINAC, Costa Rica's protected areas authority, in advance.

Waterfall trail entry closes at midday

— not the park, the trails. Arrive at 12:30 and you are looking at the visitor center.

And the Santa María sector requires 4WD

, which affects which vehicle you arrange.

Combined: a trip from San José that starts with a four-hour drive arrives after the trails have closed.

Getting to Guanacaste

Option From San José Notes
Rental car 4–5h to Liberia Then 1h+ to park sectors
Shuttle 5h Fixed morning departures
Scheduled flight to Liberia ~50 min + ground Limited frequencies
Private charter 35 minutes Land in time for the trails

Liberia (LIR) is 161 km (100 mi) from San José — 35 minutes by air.

The rest of Guanacaste

Papagayo is the marina and the access point to the gulf. Operating hours 8:00 to 20:00, and much of the coastline is reachable by sea rather than road.

The wind is the region's defining variable

Papagayo winds run strong in season, which is what makes kitesurfing excellent at Bahía Salinas and makes sunset catamaran trips less comfortable in the same months.

One scheduling conflict worth knowing

Rincón de la Vieja trails close at noon, and sunset catamarans depart late afternoon. They fit in the same day only with tight coordination — and only if you land early.

Sportfishing: runs offshore, with catch and release standard for billfish in the eastern Pacific. Mornings are typically calmer.

A day that clears both windows

06:30 — Depart San José 07:05 — Land at Liberia 08:00 — Rincón de la Vieja, trails open 11:30 — Out before the noon closure 14:00 — Papagayo marina 16:30 — Sunset catamaran 19:30 — Departure

That sequence requires landing by 7 a.m. Which is precisely what road travel from San José cannot deliver.

Rincón de la Vieja National Park from the air

The volcanic relief of the interior, with Rincón de la Vieja anchoring the northeast.

The Papagayo gulf with its coves — several of which have no road access at all, and are visible only from the water or the air.

And the coastline running south toward the Nicoya peninsula.

Costa Rica network flight times

From San José (SJO):

Destination Distance Flight time
La Fortuna / Arenal (FON) 71 km (44 mi) 15 minutes
Tortuguero (TTQ) 99 km (62 mi) 20 minutes
Drake (DRK) 155 km (96 mi) 30 minutes
Liberia (LIR) 161 km (100 mi) 35 minutes
Puerto Jiménez (PJM) 191 km (119 mi) 40 minutes

Before you book

Buy park tickets online. There is no gate option.

Trails close to entry at 12:00.

4WD for the Santa María sector.

Check wind forecasts if any part of your plan is on the water.

And reef-safe sunscreen for anything involving the gulf.

What the 4WD sector requires

The Santa María sector needs 4WD

, and that is not a comfort recommendation.

Confirm with your vehicle provider: that the category you booked covers it, since standard rentals often do not.

And in the wet season

, check access conditions before setting out — track conditions change considerably.

The Las Pailas sector is the alternative when the vehicle does not qualify.

Frequently asked questions

What time do Rincón de la Vieja trails close?

Entry to the waterfall trails closes at 12:00 noon. Arriving after that means you see the visitor center, not the trails.

Can you buy tickets at the gate?

No. Tickets have been online-only through SINAC since 1 August 2023. Buy in advance or you do not enter.

Do you need 4WD?

For the Santa María sector, yes. Confirm which sector your plan uses before arranging a vehicle.

How long does it take to reach Guanacaste from San José?

Four to five hours by road to Liberia, plus another hour or more to the park sectors. By air, Liberia is 35 minutes from San José.

When is the wind strongest in Guanacaste?

Papagayo winds run strong in season — excellent for kitesurfing at Bahía Salinas, less comfortable for sunset catamarans in the same months.

Can you combine the park and a sunset catamaran?

Only with tight coordination. The trails close to entry at noon and catamarans depart late afternoon, so the sequence works if you land early enough.
