Corcovado operates 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and wildlife concentrates from 5:30 to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Those hours exclude both windows — and Sirena is one of only two ways around it.
The problem, stated plainly
Wildlife activity concentrates 5:30 to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The park operates 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Anyone entering and leaving the same day misses both, and spends the visit in midday heat when sightings drop sharply.
The two solutions
Overnight at Sirena, the ranger station inside the park — which puts you inside the boundary when the animals move.
Or land before dawn and work the unregulated forest outside the boundary, then enter when the gate opens at 8:00.
Both require arriving before first light, which is what road travel from the Central Valley cannot deliver.
The stations
Sirena, Los Patos, San Pedrillo and La Leona, linked by maintained trails.
Sirena is the one with lodging inside the park, and the only one that solves the dawn problem from within.
One seasonal closure: the San Pedrillo–Sirena trail closes from 1 May to 1 December.
The park's conditions
Daily cap: 200 people.
Certified guide mandatory.
Hours 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Advance reservation required, and it should be resolved before you buy flights or book lodging — with a 200-person cap, the permit determines your dates.
Why Osa has this much wildlife
Two geological reasons.
Age: the peninsula's relief is basalt 50 to 65 million years old, and that depth of time let diversity accumulate without the interruptions younger terrain suffered.
And rain: 4,000 to 5,000 mm (157–197 in) annually, sustaining a rainforest of extraordinary productivity.
Old substrate plus abundant water is what produces the density Corcovado is known for.
What you see
Primates, with the species of Costa Rica's southern Pacific.
Large mammals — the thing that separates Corcovado from every other park in the country.
Birdlife ranking the peninsula among Central America's reference destinations.
And an honest note: sightings are not guaranteed, and in closed forest much of what you perceive is auditory.
Getting to Sirena station Corcovado
Four airstrips serve the peninsula from different angles:
Drake (DRK) — 155 km (96 mi) from San José: 30 minutes
Golfito (GLF) — 187 km (116 mi): 40 minutes
Puerto Jiménez (PJM) — 191 km (119 mi): 40 minutes
Palmar Sur (PMZ) — the northern approach
Which one you need depends on the sector you reserved. Confirm that before booking flights.
And Carate requires 4WD, with roads that cross several rivers.
A day that covers both windows
05:00 — Depart San José 05:40 — Land at Puerto Jiménez 06:00 — Dawn window, wildlife outside the boundary 08:00 — Corcovado entry with your guide 15:00 — Sector closes 16:00 — Afternoon window 18:30 — Departure
Both activity windows plus the park, in one day — which is exactly what the 8-to-3 schedule denies anyone arriving by road.
What to bring
Repellent and rain gear. At 4,000–5,000 mm annually, both are mandatory.
Hiking boots with real grip.
Binoculars — in closed forest they are the difference.
Neutral colours, no fragrance.
Plenty of water.
And a headlamp for pre-dawn departures.
The conduct
Stay on the trails.
Low noise, which also improves your odds.
No playback to attract wildlife.
No feeding animals.
No collecting anything.
And no litter.
Before you book
Reserve the park in advance — 200-person cap.
Confirm your sector, since it determines the airstrip.
Check river crossing conditions in the wet season.
And confirm whether the San Pedrillo–Sirena trail is open for your dates.
Fly with AeroRide
The peninsula's airstrips are 30 to 40 minutes from San José. Tell us your dates, your permit and your passenger count.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If your permit is for a dawn entry or a specific station, tell us the time. Landing before the gate opens is the entire reason to charter here.

Frequently asked questions
Can you stay overnight in Corcovado?
Yes, at Sirena station inside the park. It is one of only two ways to be inside the boundary during the dawn wildlife window, since the park itself runs 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
What are the Corcovado ranger stations?
Sirena, Los Patos, San Pedrillo and La Leona, linked by maintained trails. Sirena is the one with lodging inside the park.
When is the best time for wildlife in Osa?
Dawn, 5:30 to 8:00 a.m., and late afternoon, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The park's 8-to-3 schedule excludes both, which is the core planning problem.
Are any trails closed seasonally?
Yes. The San Pedrillo–Sirena trail closes from 1 May to 1 December.
Why does Osa have so much wildlife?
Two geological reasons: relief of basalt 50 to 65 million years old, which allowed diversity to accumulate uninterrupted, and 4,000 to 5,000 mm of annual rainfall.
Which airstrip should you use?
It depends on your reserved sector. Drake is 30 minutes from San José, Golfito and Puerto Jiménez 40, and Palmar Sur serves the northern approach.
