Río Celeste and Poás, Costa Rica share a problem: you cannot buy a ticket at the gate, and both sell out. Poás runs on hourly slots that open four weeks ahead; Río Celeste caps its trail separately from the park itself.
Poás: the slot system
Online reservation is mandatory
, by specific one-hour time slots.
Up to 50 visitors per slot
Slots open four weeks in advance: and fill quickly in high season.
No entry without a reservation
$15 per person for foreign visitors, paid online at booking.
Rangers check the confirmation at the gate — print it or save it offline.
The critical window: December to April, weekends and US school vacation periods sell out weeks ahead. At Easter and Christmas, slots can be fully booked.
Which means: if you travel in those periods, the park reservation comes before the flight booking, not after.
The crater
One of the largest active volcanic craters in the world: roughly 1.5 km (0.9 mi) across and 300 m (984 ft) deep.
The park entrance sits at 2,600 m (8,530 ft) — cool weather, and layers regardless of what the lowlands are doing.
It is only 37 km (23 mi) north of San José, which makes it the country's most accessible major volcano. In clear conditions the drive takes about 90 minutes, climbing past strawberry farms, cloud forest and coffee plantations.
Río Celeste: two separate caps
1,200 people per day for the park.
And 500 on the trail.
Those are different limits, and the trail cap is the one that decides whether you reach the waterfall.
Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., every day. A six-hour window, which with the trail and the transfer means arriving late cuts sharply into what you see.
Tickets through the official SINAC platform only.
Getting to Río Celeste
Local sources are blunt: there is no direct transport to the park.
By bus: reach Bijagua, the nearest town at 10 km (6 mi), and arrange onward transport.
By vehicle: from Bijagua, north about 5 km, take the right turn to Bar el Mirador, continue to San Miguel, then 6 km more to the entrance.
The transfer is the complex part of this trip, not the trail.
Why the water is blue — and when it is not
The color is an optical effect, not a pigment
mineral particles suspended at a specific size scatter light in the wavelengths we perceive as blue.
Which means the color depends on light
Under overcast skies: the effect loses intensity.
After heavy rain
, sediment changes the particle size and the water can run turbid rather than blue.
Check recent conditions before fixing a date — and keep the date flexible, which is exactly what a charter allows and a scheduled ticket does not.

Layers for Poás at 2,600 m.
Boots that can get muddy for Río Celeste.
And check recent water conditions before committing to the date.
Fly with AeroRide
Tell us your date, your park reservation and your passenger count, and we will quote the right aircraft.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If your plan depends on a time slot or on water conditions that can change, say so. Moving the date by a day is what a charter buys you.

Frequently asked questions
How do you book Poás volcano?
Online through SINAC, choosing a one-hour time slot. Slots open four weeks ahead, hold up to 50 visitors each, and no entry is allowed without a reservation. Entry is $15 for foreign visitors.
Is Río Celeste always blue?
No. The color is an optical effect from mineral particles scattering light, so it depends on illumination. Overcast skies dull it, and heavy rain can leave the water turbid instead of blue.
What time does Tenorio close?
The park runs 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily, with caps of 1,200 people for the park and 500 on the trail — two separate limits.
How do you get to Río Celeste?
There is no direct transport. By bus you reach Bijagua, 10 km away, and arrange onward transport. By vehicle, head north from Bijagua about 5 km, take the right turn to Bar el Mirador, continue to San Miguel, then 6 km more.
Which Costa Rican parks require online booking?
Poás, Manuel Antonio, Irazú, Braulio Carrillo, Tapantí, Tortuguero, Isla San Lucas, Chirripó, Tenorio, Rincón de la Vieja and Carara. None sell tickets at the gate.
How big is the Poás crater?
Roughly 1.5 km across and 300 m deep, one of the largest active volcanic craters in the world. The park entrance sits at 2,600 m.
