The Nicoya Peninsula has three airstrips serving three opposite kinds of trip — and one shared reason to fly between them rather than drive.
The three, compared
| Airstrip | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tamarindo (TNO) | Most developed, full services | Surf, catamaran, fishing, golf |
| Nosara (NOB) | Wellness-oriented | Yoga, longer stays, quieter surf |
| Punta Islita (PBP) | Most isolated, boutique | Scarlet macaws, real disconnection |
And Cóbano (ACO) at the southern tip, for Cabo Blanco, Santa Teresa and Mal País.
What each actually gives you
Tamarindo is the most developed, with the coast's greatest concentration of services. Surf, catamaran, sportfishing, beach clubs and golf at Hacienda Pinilla.
For: anyone wanting atmosphere, variety and everything arranged.
Nosara is oriented toward wellness, with yoga, retreats and holistic centres. Playa Guiones is its reference break, more consistent and less crowded than Tamarindo.
For: longer stays, remote work and surf in a quiet setting.
Punta Islita is the most isolated, with high-end boutique lodging. Scarlet macaw watching, horseback riding, via ferrata and cliff rappelling, and offshore fishing.
For: real disconnection, with services but without the scene.
Why fly between them
The peninsula's roads are dirt in several sections
, with conditions that change considerably in the wet season.
Which means ground transfers between Tamarindo, Nosara and Punta Islita take substantially longer than any map suggests.
And all three have their own airstrip
The hop by air skips the part of the trip that performs worst.
Confirm road conditions with your operator: if the plan includes ground transfers.
The scarlet macaws
They are Punta Islita's natural asset.
Timing rules: dawn and the last hours of afternoon, when they move between roosts and feeding areas.
And their presence depends on the fruiting of the trees they feed on, which varies by season.
Ask local guides what is happening on your dates.
The surf
Playa Guiones, in Nosara, and the Tamarindo breaks have different characters.
Being a confident swimmer is a requirement, not a recommendation.
Ask locally which break and which tide suit your level.
And do not assume permanent lifeguard service on the peninsula's beaches.
The Guanacaste wind
Papagayo winds affect the northern coast in season.
For sailing and offshore fishing: mornings generally offer more stable conditions.
And a cancellation for sea state is professional judgment, not bad luck.

Before you book
Each airstrip serves a different kind of trip — confirm which matches yours.
High-factor sun protection and footwear, since the sand gets hot.
Long-sleeve rash guard for surfing.
Check the wind forecast if anything on the plan is on the water.
And binoculars if you are going for macaws.
Tamarindo vs Nosara from the air
The whole peninsula, with the contrast between the developed northern coast and the southern stretches with no road access.
The three airstrips distributed along the coast, which from above explains why hopping between them makes sense.
And the Gulf of Nicoya to the east, with its islands.
Fly with AeroRide
Three airstrips, and hopping between them beats the roads. Tell us your route, dates and passenger count.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If your trip spans more than one beach town, give us the sequence. On this peninsula, the road is the part worth skipping.
