Tortuguero turtle nesting: 1 March to 31 October, groups of 11

Tortuguero turtle nesting season runs 1 March to 31 October, with mandatory guides, groups capped at 11 and no flash photography.

Green turtle nesting at Tortuguero runs from 1 March to 31 October, with a mandatory guide, groups capped at 11 people and flash photography prohibited. And there is a timing problem the brochures skip.

The season and the rules

1 March to 31 October for green turtle nesting.

A guide is mandatory.

Groups are limited to 11 people.

Flash photography is prohibited.

And sightings are not guaranteed. This is wildlife, and no serious operator promises otherwise.

Why the timing is difficult

Nesting activity happens after dark.

Which means either an overnight stay or a late departure — and scheduled flights do not operate at night.

That is the constraint the entire trip is built around, and it is why most itineraries include a lodge night whether or not you wanted one.

Why flash matters

It is not a courtesy rule.

Hatchlings orient toward the sea by moonlight reflected on water. Any artificial light draws them inland, where they die.

And nesting females abandon the attempt if they detect light or movement.

Red-filter headlamps only, and only where your guide permits.

The canals

Tortuguero's canals are the other reason to come, and they work differently from the beach.

Narrow channels are only reachable by kayak — a motorboat does not enter, and the noise would clear the wildlife if it did.

In a kayak you move in silence, at water level, with observation at close range.

And launch timing depends on tide, so a good operator schedules by the table rather than by convenience.

Wildlife concentrates at dawn and in the last hours of the afternoon.

The park

Entry: $30 per person, plus a $2 and 13% processing charge depending on the booking route.

The park closes at 4:00 p.m.

Boat groups are capped at 11.

And the same ticket covers canals and trail.

What the beach is not

Worth stating, because it causes disappointment.

There is no coral reef off Tortuguero, and the sea is not swimmable — strong currents and shark presence.

Costa Rica's Caribbean reef is south, in the Cahuita–Puerto Viejo–Manzanillo corridor.

This beach is for walking, for nesting turtles and for the light. Not for swimming.

Birds and photography

First light without overnighting is the central argument for flying here.

On the scheduled route you land mid-morning and the window has closed.

A 20-minute charter delivers dawn on arrival day.

On photography gear: it is bulky rather than heavy, and a charter handles it within aircraft limits without the excess baggage fees of scheduled operations. Declare it when booking so the right aircraft is assigned.

And no flash with turtles, under any circumstances.

Getting to Tortuguero turtle nesting season

Tortuguero (TTQ) — 99 km (62 mi) from San José: 20 minutes.

No road reaches the village. Access is by air or by water — a dock at La Pavona, then 1 to 1.5 hours by boat, after 3 to 4 hours of road.

Rest of the network from San José (SJO):

Destination Distance Flight time
La Fortuna / Arenal (FON) 71 km (44 mi) 15 minutes
Limón (LIO) 130 km (81 mi) 25 minutes
Drake (DRK) 155 km (96 mi) 30 minutes
Liberia (LIR) 161 km (100 mi) 35 minutes

The day, and the night

05:00 — Depart San José 05:20 — Land at Tortuguero 05:45 — Canals at first light 10:00 — Park entry, groups of 11 14:00 — Kayak the narrow channels 16:00 — Park closes 20:00 — Nesting tour, if in season

With the caveat that a nesting tour means staying the night — which is the one thing the flight cannot solve.

Before you book

Confirm the season: 1 March to 31 October.

No flash. Red-filter headlamp only.

Serious repellent — this is lowland rainforest on water.

Rain jacket regardless of forecast.

Dry bag for gear.

And binoculars, which from a boat change everything.

If dawn wildlife is why you are going, say so. Landing before sunrise is what a charter buys here — the scheduled route lands after the window closes.

Can you photograph nesting turtles?

Not with flash — it is prohibited. Hatchlings orient toward the sea by moonlight on water, and artificial light draws them inland where they die. Nesting females also abandon the attempt.

How many people per turtle tour?

Groups are limited to 11, the same cap that applies to boat groups in the park.

Why do you have to stay overnight for nesting?

Nesting happens after dark, and scheduled flights do not operate at night. That constraint is why most itineraries include a lodge night.

Can you swim at Tortuguero?

No. There is no reef and the sea is not swimmable, due to strong currents and shark presence. Costa Rica's Caribbean reef is south, around Cahuita and Puerto Viejo.

Why kayak the canals?

The narrow channels are only reachable by kayak — a motorboat does not enter, and the noise would clear the wildlife. Launch timing depends on tide.
