Most Tortuguero itineraries include a lodge night by default. Two things genuinely justify it — and outside those, a 20-minute flight covers the day.
When an overnight is worth it
Turtle nesting. Green turtle nesting runs 1 March to 31 October, and it happens after dark. Scheduled flights do not operate at night, so a nesting tour means staying.
And serious photography. Dawn and dusk are when the canals perform, and having both without travel between them changes what you come away with.
Outside those two, the day is coverable. Tortuguero is 20 minutes from San José, and a pre-dawn landing delivers the first-light window without a lodge.
The village
There are no roads. Everything moves by water.
Which shapes the stay: you walk, or you take a boat. There is no third option.
And services are those of a village accessible only by water — bring what you will need, including a personal first aid kit.
What the lodges give you
Proximity to the canals at dawn
, without the pre-dawn flight.
And the nesting tours
, which run at night with a mandatory guide, groups capped at 11 people and flash photography prohibited.
On the flash rule, and why it matters: hatchlings find the sea by orienting toward moonlight reflected on water. Any artificial light draws them inland, where they die. And nesting females abandon the attempt if they detect it.
Red-filter headlamps only
, and only where your guide permits.
The park
Entry: $30 per person, plus a $2 and 13% processing charge depending on the booking route.
The park closes at 4:00 p.m.
Boat groups are capped at 11.
And tickets go through the official SINAC platform, like the country's ten other online-only parks.
What the beach is not
Worth stating, because it disappoints people.
There is no coral reef off Tortuguero, and the sea is not swimmable — strong currents and shark presence.
Costa Rica's Caribbean reef is south, in the Cahuita–Puerto Viejo–Manzanillo corridor.
This beach is for walking, for nesting turtles and for the light.
Photography, specifically
Gear is bulky rather than heavy, and a charter handles it within aircraft limits without scheduled operations' excess baggage fees. Declare it when booking so the right aircraft is assigned.
And no flash with turtles, under any circumstances.
On the canals: the narrow channels are only reachable by kayak, which moves in silence — and silence is what keeps the wildlife in frame.
Getting to where to stay in Tortuguero
Tortuguero (TTQ) — 99 km (62 mi) from San José: 20 minutes.
No road reaches the village. The alternative is 3 to 4 hours by road to a dock, usually La Pavona, then 1 to 1.5 hours by boat.
Rest of the network from San José (SJO):
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| La Fortuna / Arenal (FON) | 71 km (44 mi) | 15 minutes |
| Limón (LIO) | 130 km (81 mi) | 25 minutes |
| Drake (DRK) | 155 km (96 mi) | 30 minutes |

The day without a lodge
05:00 — Depart San José 05:20 — Land at Tortuguero 05:45 — Canals at first light, peak wildlife hour 10:00 — Park entry, groups of 11 14:00 — Kayak the narrow channels 16:00 — Park closes 17:30 — Departure
Dawn on arrival day, which is the whole argument for flying rather than driving.
Before you book
Confirm nesting season — 1 March to 31 October — if that is the objective.
Serious repellent. This is lowland rainforest on water.
Rain jacket regardless of forecast.
Dry bag for gear.
Binoculars, which from a boat change everything.
And a red-filter headlamp for any night activity.
Fly with AeroRide
Tortuguero is 20 minutes from San José. Tell us your dates and passenger count.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If dawn wildlife is why you are going, say so. Landing before sunrise is what removes the need for a lodge night — unless the nesting is what you came for.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need to stay overnight in Tortuguero?
Two things justify it: turtle nesting, which happens after dark and cannot be covered by a day trip, and serious photography, which wants both dawn and dusk. Outside those, a 20-minute flight covers the day.
Is Tortuguero worth two days?
If you are there for nesting between 1 March and 31 October, or for photography, yes. Otherwise a pre-dawn landing delivers the first-light window without a lodge.
What is the village like?
There are no roads — everything moves by water. You walk or take a boat, and services are those of a place accessible only by water.
Why is flash prohibited with turtles?
Hatchlings find the sea by orienting toward moonlight reflected on water, so artificial light draws them inland where they die. Nesting females also abandon the attempt if they detect it.
Can you swim at Tortuguero?
No. There is no reef and the sea is not swimmable, due to strong currents and shark presence. Costa Rica's Caribbean reef is south, around Cahuita and Puerto Viejo.
Can you bring camera gear on a charter?
Yes, within aircraft limits and without scheduled operations' excess baggage fees. Declare it when booking so the right aircraft is assigned.
