This is where private flying stops competing with scheduled service and starts doing something else entirely. It is not faster on each leg: it draws an itinerary the network does not draw.
The problem with hub-and-spoke networks
Scheduled networks organise themselves as a star around their hub. In Costa Rica that means San José.
Linking two coastal destinations to each other means going through the middle, however close they are to one another. Where scheduled service exists to a destination, its frequencies and times are set by the airline, not by us.
A Tortuguero–Arenal–Tamarindo circuit by scheduled service is three returns to San José. By air it is three point-to-point hops.
The distances of the classic circuit
| Leg | Distance |
|---|---|
| San José → Tortuguero | 53.4 NM |
| Tortuguero → Arenal | 63.1 NM |
| Arenal → Tamarindo | 73.6 NM |
| Tamarindo → San José | 97.1 NM |
None reaches a hundred nautical miles. Four short hops that overland would be four days of driving, and on the scheduled network three transits through the hub.
The four air legs together add up to less distance than the same circuit flown through San José, because every return to the hub retraces ground already covered.
Order matters, and it is not arbitrary
Tortuguero first. It is the least flexible destination: no road, and a last boat of the day that sets the hour. Access to the lodges is by river and has a last departure of the day that sets your flight time. Better dealt with while the itinerary still has slack.
Arenal next, and early in the day. Its window is set by cloud around the volcano, not by the client. Cloud around the volcano sets the field’s operating window, and it is usually more favourable early in the day. Putting Arenal in the middle leaves room to try again if one day does not cooperate.
And Guanacaste last. It has the best onward connection — Liberia takes international flights directly — so finishing there avoids a transit.
That order is not aesthetic: it reduces the chance that one failure drags the rest with it.
When a circuit genuinely pays
With a short stay and several destinations. With seven nights and three regions, transit eats half the trip by any other route.
With a group. The whole aircraft is quoted, so a four-leg circuit with six people has different arithmetic from one with two. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
And when the destinations do not connect to each other. That is the pure case: there is no alternative to the detour, only the choice of how long it takes.
When it does not
With two weeks in hand. There is time for the road, and in Costa Rica the road is part of the trip for many people.
And with a single destination. A one-stop circuit is not a circuit: it is a return flight, and the comparison goes back to the usual one.
What to settle before quoting
The order of destinations and how many nights in each.
The final transfers at each stop, because every one has its own and the timings do not coordinate themselves.
And what margin the last day leaves, which is where it belongs.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the scheduled network not chain them?
Because it is organised as a star around San José. Linking two coastal destinations means going through the hub.
What are the distances of the classic circuit?
San José–Tortuguero 53.4 NM, Tortuguero–Arenal 63.1 NM, Arenal–Tamarindo 73.6 NM and Tamarindo–San José 97.1 NM.
Does the order matter?
Yes. Tortuguero first for rigidity, Arenal in the middle for the volcano window, Guanacaste last for the international connection.
When does it pay?
With a short stay and several destinations, with a group, and when the destinations do not connect to each other.
When does it not?
With two weeks in hand, or with a single destination, which then is not a circuit at all.
What needs settling first?
The order and nights per stop, the final transfers at each, and the margin on the last day.
