This is the destination in the catalogue where flying pays least, and it deserves its own page precisely for that reason.
The two options
| Shuttle or car | Flight | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | About 160 km | 33.4 NM |
| Time | 2.5–3 hours | One short leg |
| Route | Highway 27 and the Costanera Sur | — |
| Cost | Low (shared shuttle) or medium (private) | On request per aircraft |
Why the road wins almost always
It is short and it is good. Highway 27 to Caldera and the Costanera Sur to Quepos are among the best roads in the country, with no mountain pass and no gravel sections.
Two and a half to three hours, predictable. There is no spread to buy, which is what this catalogue sells on almost every other page.
And there is no shortage of options: shared shuttles several times a day, private shuttles and car hire. The market is well served.
The arithmetic problem of the short leg
Thirty-three nautical miles is among the shortest legs in the catalogue, and there the arithmetic works against us.
The price per nautical mile rises the shorter the flight, because the fixed costs — positioning, fees, crew time — are spread over less distance. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
A thirty-three-mile flight does not cost a third of a hundred-mile one. It costs a good deal more than a third.
It is the same effect the catalogue notes on Guápiles–San José: when the distance is short and the road direct, the flight competes on its least favourable ground.
The three cases where it does pay
A very late intercontinental arrival. If you land at Santamaría at six in the evening, three hours of Costanera in the dark is another matter. The flight solves it while there is still light.
Chaining south without returning to San José. Here is Quepos's real use. Drake Bay is 52.2 nautical miles away and San Isidro 25.4: an itinerary of Manuel Antonio and Osa does not need the Central Valley. That is the flight that pays, not the arrival one.
A group of six or more with reduced mobility or bulky equipment. Specific cases, not the rule — and even then, compare against a private shuttle first.
What we tell almost everyone
If you are travelling as a couple or a family, on normal dates and arriving in daylight: take the shuttle. It is cheaper, it takes little longer once you count getting to the departure airfield, and the Costanera run is pleasant.
We prefer to say so before the quote. A flight that solves nothing costs you money and costs us credibility. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
And the transfer at the other end
La Managua airfield is a few minutes from Quepos, but Manuel Antonio is further on, and the transfer is not included in the fare. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
Shuttles, by contrast, usually drop you at the hotel door. It is one more point in their favour at this particular destination.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth flying to Manuel Antonio?
Almost never. The Costanera is two and a half to three hours of good road with nothing that fails.
Why is such a short flight expensive?
Because fixed costs are spread over less distance. Thirty-three miles do not cost a third of a hundred. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
When does it pay?
With a very late intercontinental arrival, or to chain south without returning to San José.
What lies south of Quepos?
San Isidro at 25.4 nautical miles and Drake Bay at 52.2. That itinerary does not need the Central Valley.
Does the flight drop me at Manuel Antonio?
No. La Managua is near Quepos, but Manuel Antonio is further on and the transfer is separate. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
What do you generally recommend?
The shuttle, if you are a couple or family on normal dates. We say so before quoting.
