Quepos is the best-placed origin on the Costa Rican Pacific, and the reason is in the table below: it is the only point from which the Central Valley, the interior and the whole Osa Peninsula sit inside the same hour of flying.
The destinations, by distance
| Destination | Distance |
|---|---|
| San Isidro del General | 25.4 NM |
| Tobías Bolaños (Pavas) | 30.9 NM |
| San José | 33.4 NM |
| Palmar Sur | 49.1 NM |
| Drake Bay | 52.2 NM |
| Tambor | 55.3 NM |
| Puerto Jiménez | 73.3 NM |
Seven destinations, none beyond seventy-five nautical miles. No other origin in the Costa Rican catalogue has that balance.
And none of the seven restricts the aircraft severely except Drake Bay, which makes Quepos a comfortable base for groups.
What makes this origin different
Most origins in the catalogue are line ends: you come in and go out the same way.
Quepos is not. It sits at the centre of the Pacific arc, with the Central Valley to the northeast, the interior to the east and Osa to the south. That allows circuits that do not retrace their steps.
An itinerary of Manuel Antonio, Chirripó and Corcovado never needs to pass through San José, which cuts both the price and the transfer days.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Inland: San Isidro at 25 nautical miles
It is the nearest neighbour, and the one fewest people consider.
San Isidro del General is 25.4 nautical miles away — closer than San José. It opens Chirripó, the General valley and, by road, the whole Pérez Zeledón area.
For anyone combining beach and mountain, it is the short link that avoids the Cerro de la Muerte entirely — the three-thousand-metre pass that carries the country's worst fog. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Towards Osa: three different ways in
Osa has no single gateway, and from Quepos all three are visible:
Palmar Sur (49.1 NM) does not restrict the aircraft. With a large group, that is the way in.
Drake Bay (52.2 NM) is the destination itself, and its 1,000 × 18 m runway does not restrict.
Puerto Jiménez (73.3 NM) serves the Golfo Dulce and the park's southern sector.
If your trip includes Corcovado, the park quota is booked before the flight, and we do not handle it. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
And to the north, the exception
Tambor is 55.3 nautical miles away, but the rest of the Nicoya Peninsula is far: Tamarindo at 112.6 and Nosara at 95.7.
From Quepos, north is a long flight. South is a short one. Worth keeping in mind when ordering the itinerary — a trip wanting both Guanacaste and Osa does better entering by Liberia and leaving by the south than using Quepos as a base for both.
Frequently asked questions
What destinations run from Quepos?
San Isidro at 25.4 nautical miles, San José at 33.4, Palmar Sur at 49.1, Drake Bay at 52.2, Tambor at 55.3 and Puerto Jiménez at 73.3.
Why is it a good origin?
Because it sits at the centre of the Pacific arc: Central Valley, interior and Osa all inside the same hour of flying.
Do I have to return to San José between destinations?
No. An itinerary of Manuel Antonio, Chirripó and Corcovado does not need it.
Which is the best way into Osa?
It depends on the group. Drake Bay does not restrict by width: 18 m. Palmar Sur, at twelve metres, restricts more.
And northern Nicoya?
It is far: Tamarindo at 112.6 nautical miles. From Quepos the south is short and the north long.
Do I need permits?
For Corcovado yes, and they are booked before the flight. We do not handle them. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
