There is no single answer. There is a prior question that decides everything: which part of Osa are you going to?
The peninsula has two sides that do not connect well with each other, and choosing the wrong way in costs half a day.
The four ways in
| Entry | From San José | Restricts the aircraft | Serves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palmar Sur | 76.3 NM | No | Drake and the north, via Sierpe |
| Drake Bay | 83.5 NM | Yes, severely | Drake direct |
| Puerto Jiménez | 102.6 NM | Yes | Golfo Dulce, Matapalo, southern park |
| Golfito | 100.7 NM | No | Golfo Dulce by water |
If you are going to Drake Bay
With four people or fewer, fly direct. Eighty-three nautical miles and that is that.
With six or more the answer changes: Punta Islita is eight metres wide and there may be no suitable aircraft. The way in is Palmar Sur — which does not restrict — and from there road to Sierpe and boat. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
It sounds like a detour and it is not: the two fields are 17.3 nautical miles apart, and one large flight usually costs less than two small ones. The group also arrives together.
The trade-off is the Sierpe boat, which has tide-driven schedules of its own and which we do not operate. The boat leg on the Térraba depends on tides and is arranged by your accommodation or a local operator. Confirm it before fixing the flight's hour, not after.
If you are going to the Golfo Dulce or the southern park
Your way in is Puerto Jiménez, and there is no good alternative: it is Corcovado's main overland access from the south.
With a large group, Golfito is the answer: it does not restrict, it is ten nautical miles across the gulf, and a regular boat runs. Ten extra miles in exchange for not splitting the group.
And by road
You can, and it is worth knowing what that means.
From the Central Valley to Palmar Sur is about six hours along the Costanera. To Puerto Jiménez, more. And no road reaches Drake: you have to finish via Sierpe by boat anyway.
In other words: the car does not save you the last link, it only adds six hours before it.
What sets the date, and it is not the flight
If your trip is to Corcovado, the park quota is booked before the flight, requires a certified guide, and we do not handle it. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
It is the reverse of a normal booking, and it is what derails most plans. Fix the park first, then the flight.
And the last leg
From the airport to the lodges there is still track or sea depending on where you stay. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
In Osa that leg can be long. Ask your accommodation before settling on times.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way into Osa?
It depends which side. For Drake, Palmar Sur at 76.3 nautical miles or Drake direct at 83.5. For the Golfo Dulce, Puerto Jiménez at 102.6.
Can I fly direct to Drake Bay?
Yes. Drake’s runway is 1,000 × 18 m; what counts is the category’s capacity. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Why Palmar Sur if it is further from Drake?
Because it does not restrict and they are 17.3 nautical miles apart. One large flight usually costs less than two small ones.
Can you get there by road?
To Palmar Sur yes, about six hours. No road reaches Drake: you finish by boat regardless.
What do I book first?
The Corcovado quota, if you are going to the park. Then the flight. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
Is the lodge transfer included?
No. In Osa it can be long, by track or sea. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
