Last-minute and same-day: what is actually possible

Sometimes yes and sometimes no, and the difference is not luck. This page explains what decides the answer and how to ask so you get it quickly.

The short answer is sometimes, and it is worth understanding what that depends on, because it is not luck.

What makes same-day possible

An aircraft free and a crew available. Obvious, but it is literally the limiting factor: the aeroplane may be on other work, and crew duty limits are regulatory.

Those limits count from the moment the crew reports, not from take-off. An aircraft that has already flown in the morning may have less margin than it appears to at midday.

A destination that accepts the operation at that notice. A field with services and no special restrictions resolves quickly. One needing prior coordination or a permit does not. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

Fuel matters here too: at a field with no supply, the aircraft has to plan the return with what it carries, which narrows what is workable on short notice.

And weather that cooperates. In a network of daylight, visual fields, same-day is also the day you already know whether flying is possible. Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.

What makes it impossible

Four cases, all of them foreseeable:

The destination requires a permit. Corcovado, Guna Yala. Those formalities do not speed up by paying more.

The itinerary crosses a border. Departure and entry formalities need lead time. Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details. An international flight at short notice is rarely at short notice.

The group is large. Higher-capacity aircraft are fewer and more heavily booked. In high season, a free Caravan on twenty-four hours' notice is uncommon.

And the field needs prior coordination. Placencia is the catalogue's example, and the answer at short notice may simply be that the field cannot be worked that day.

Where last-minute works in your favour

This is the part almost nobody uses.

Empty legs are advertised at short notice, precisely because they come from operations that have only just been confirmed. We work with empty legs: they arise from operations already confirmed, are listed at short notice and are not guaranteed. Ask us what is available that day.

Someone who can decide today for tomorrow is in the best position to catch one. Urgency and flexibility are not the same thing, and whoever has both finds openings the planner never sees.

How to ask so the answer comes quickly

In one message, four details: how many, origin and destination, today or tomorrow, and what baggage.

With that we can tell you in minutes whether there is anything. Without it, the conversation drags out exactly when there is least margin.

And say if you have any flexibility, however little. "Today after two" opens considerably more doors than "today at ten sharp".

What we will not do

Confirm a flight before an aircraft is assigned. That is what would make the answer always yes, and it is exactly what turns an urgent situation into a problem.

If there is nothing, we say so on the spot and suggest the alternative: another time, another field, or scheduled service if it fits. A clear answer in ten minutes is worth more than a promise that collapses three hours later.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fly the same day?

Sometimes. It depends on a free aircraft and crew, on the destination accepting it, and on the weather.

What makes it impossible?

Destinations needing a permit, itineraries crossing a border, large groups, and fields needing prior coordination.

Does paying more speed it up?

Not the formalities. A park quota or a community authorisation does not accelerate for price.

Is there any advantage to last-minute?

Yes: empty legs are advertised at short notice. Someone who decides fast is well placed. We work with empty legs: they arise from operations already confirmed, are listed at short notice and are not guaranteed. Ask us what is available that day.

What details should I send?

How many, origin and destination, today or tomorrow, and what baggage. With that we answer in minutes.

What about the weather?

In daylight, visual fields, same-day is also the day you already know whether flying is possible. Sometimes that works in your favour.

Will you confirm without an aircraft?

No. Confirming without an assigned aircraft is what turns an urgent situation into a problem.
