How it works

Empty legs: what they are and when they help

They exist, they can be used and they genuinely save money. But they carry one condition that rules out most travellers, and it is worth knowing first.

An empty leg is a sector the aircraft has to fly anyway with no passengers: to go and collect someone, or to return to base after dropping them off.

The aircraft is making that trip regardless. If you fit into it, you can use it at a price well below the usual.

Why they exist

It follows directly from how charter works. A flight from San José to Puerto Jiménez — 102.6 nautical miles — leaves the aircraft at Puerto Jiménez. With nothing to do there, it returns empty.

That return is already paid for inside your quote. Filling it saves you nothing, but it saves the next passenger almost everything.

In a network of short legs like this one, empty legs are frequent. The difficulty is not that they exist: it is that they coincide with what you need.

In fact, eliminating empty legs by chaining routes is one of the central problems any operator faces. When they cannot, the leg goes to market.

The condition that rules out almost everyone

Here is what most advertising leaves out.

An empty leg has a fixed origin, destination, date and time. You do not choose them. They come from another client's operation, and if that client changes plans, the leg disappears.

That means it only helps you if:

  • Your origin and destination match that sector's, not something close to them
  • Your date is the same one, not the same week
  • And you can confirm quickly, because they are advertised at short notice

Anyone with a fixed itinerary almost never fits. Anyone with real flexibility fits considerably more often than they imagine, particularly on the busier corridors.

How much is actually saved

It depends on the sector and on how much notice is left. The discounts are substantial, which is why the format exists at all.

But it is worth understanding what you are buying: the same aircraft, the same operator, the same crew. What changes is not the service — it is that the trip was already scheduled.

How to ask about them

We work with empty legs: they arise from operations already confirmed, are listed at short notice and are not guaranteed. Ask us what is available that day.

What we can tell you: the more flexible you are, the more useful it is to ask. If you tell us "any day this week between San José and the Pacific coast", the chance of finding something is real. If you tell us "Thursday at nine to Tamarindo", that is an ordinary flight. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

What you should not expect

That they replace planning. An empty leg is an opportunity, not a way of travelling.

Nor that they exist for your exact route. On busy sectors — San José to Quepos is 33.4 nautical miles — there is more movement and more chance. At rarely served destinations, almost none.

And that a low price means fewer guarantees. If someone offers you an empty leg and cannot tell you who operates the aircraft, the problem is not the empty leg.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is an empty leg?

A sector the aircraft flies without passengers to collect someone or return to base. That trip happens anyway.

Why are they cheaper?

Because the sector's cost is already covered by the operation that generates it. Filling it is additional revenue.

Can I choose the date?

No. Origin, destination, date and time are fixed by another client's operation.

Who do they suit?

Anyone with real date flexibility who can confirm quickly. With a fixed itinerary they rarely fit.

Does the service change?

No. Same aircraft, same operator, same crew. The only difference is that the trip was already scheduled.

Do they exist on every route?

No. Busy sectors see more movement and more chance; rarely served destinations, almost none.

How do I improve my chances?

By giving a wide margin: a week and an area, rather than one day and one specific destination.
