This page does not give you a figure: it explains what yours depends on. And in Guatemala you have to start with what does not affect it, because that is more than usual. On request per aircraft.
What does not limit anything here
The runway. Neither La Aurora nor Mundo Maya restricts aircraft category — in fact Flores has the longest runway in Guatemala. That is rare in this catalogue, where Punta Islita imposes eight metres of width and Guanaja eighteen. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The distance. All four destinations fall between 145.1 and 218.9 nautical miles. It is a narrow band: between the nearest and the furthest there is less than a factor of two, where in Costa Rica there is a factor of seven.
With the runway and the distance out of play, little is left, and that little decides everything.
What does decide
The formalities, at three of four destinations. San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and Belize City cross a border, with their own deadlines that require notice and cannot be accelerated. Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details.
Your group and your baggage. With the terrain unrestricted, the aircraft is decided solely by what you carry and who you travel with.
The ground transfer, which at Flores is the link most people underestimate. From the aerodrome to the archaeological site there is a road leg arranged by your local operator.
The only domestic one is the further of the first two
| Destination | Distance | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Flores / Tikal | 145.1 NM | Domestic |
| San Pedro Sula | 159.8 NM | International |
| Tegucigalpa | 195.1 NM | International |
| Belize City | 218.9 NM | International |
Fourteen nautical miles separate Flores from San Pedro Sula, and they are still different products. It is the catalogue's tightest demonstration that a border is not measured in distance.
Where flying returns most
To Flores, without argument. By road it is eight to ten hours; in the air, a little over one. It is the domestic run that saves most of a day in the whole Central American corpus.
We are not usually this categorical. In Costa Rica we recommend driving on half the routes. Here there is no qualification to offer.
And an itinerary decision that saves real money
If your plan includes Guatemala and Belize, look at the order before requesting a quote.
From Guatemala City, Belize is 218.9 nautical miles away. From Flores, 96.9. And to Placencia, 89.4.
In other words: if you are going to Tikal anyway, chaining Guatemala–Flores–Belize is considerably shorter than going and returning to the capital. Ask about it as a full itinerary, not as separate legs.
