This page does not give you a figure: it explains what yours depends on. And at Guanaja something applies that applies nowhere else in the catalogue. On request per aircraft.
The destination with no alternative
Almost every cost page on this site has a paragraph comparing against the road or the sea, and frequently recommending them.
Here there is none. Guanaja has neither Roatán's direct scheduled flights nor Utila's ferry from La Ceiba. It is the worst connected of the three Bay Islands, and that changes the price conversation.
When there is no alternative, the question stops being is flying worth it? and becomes how much flying do I need?. This page answers the second.
The origin decides more than anything
Four departure points, four different structures.
| Origin | Distance | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Roatán (RTB) | 36.3 NM | The short hop between islands |
| La Ceiba (LCE) | 69.0 NM | The mainland gateway |
| San Pedro Sula (SAP) | 130.8 NM | The international connection |
| Tegucigalpa (TGU) | 162.0 NM | From the capital, with altitude at the origin |
Roatán is barely over a quarter of the distance from San Pedro Sula. If your trip already passes through the archipelago, that is the short way. If you are arriving from abroad, San Pedro Sula avoids a stop.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The runway limits, and that is price too
Guanaja has 1,220 metres of runway by 18 wide. Length to spare, width just enough.
Eighteen metres is the same as Drake Bay, but it is a long way from the generosity of Roatán or San Pedro Sula. It restricts the aircraft category, and with it the number of people and the volume of baggage that fit in a single flight. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
For a large diving group that can mean two flights where another destination would need one. And two aircraft do not cost the same as one larger one: they cost twice the flight.
The components of your quote
The flight, per whole aircraft, not per passenger.
The island transfer, from the airport to your lodging. Guanaja has an unusual geography and that leg is not always trivial. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
The assigned aircraft, decided by the runway and by your baggage. At a diving destination, baggage weighs.
The interval between diving and flying
It is the constraint that breaks most plans at this destination, and it is physiological rather than operational: there is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying.
On a short trip to Guanaja that means the departure day is not a diving day. If your return flight connects to an international out of San Pedro Sula, take the margin generously. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
Plan backwards from the flight, not forwards from the morning.
What you can do to adjust
Travel from Roatán if you are already there. Thirty-six nautical miles against one hundred and thirty.
Split the cost across a group. The fare is per aircraft: six people pay what two pay.
Declare your baggage when you enquire. It is what most often forces a step up in category without the client expecting it, and on an eighteen-metre strip the step up is not always available.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no alternative to flying to Guanaja?
It has neither Roatán's direct scheduled flights nor Utila's ferry from La Ceiba. It is the worst connected of the three Bay Islands.
Which origin works out best?
Roatán is 36.3 nautical miles away, La Ceiba 69.0, San Pedro Sula 130.8 and Tegucigalpa 162.0. If you are already in the archipelago, Roatán is the short way.
Does the runway limit group size?
Yes. It is 1,220 metres by 18 wide: length to spare, width just enough. It restricts the aircraft category and with it the group and the baggage. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
What if there are many of us?
Two aircraft cost twice the flight, not something in between. It is worth reviewing staggered timings before quoting.
Can I dive on the day I fly?
No. There is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying. The departure day is not a diving day. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
Is the island transfer included?
No. Guanaja has an unusual geography and that leg is not always trivial. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
