The origin is what decides

San Pedro Sula is Honduras's international gateway. Ramón Villeda Morales, also known as La Mesa, sits eleven kilometres southeast of the city, opened in February 1965, and is the busiest airport in the country: 1,345,926 passengers in 2024 and over twenty thousand international and domestic flights a year.

That figure explains the route better than the distance does. Almost everyone arriving in Honduras from abroad lands here, and from here the archipelago is a single hop away.

What it competes against: the detour via La Ceiba

Here is the arithmetic that matters.

San Pedro Sula–La Ceiba is 64.3 nautical miles. La Ceiba–Guanaja, 69.0. Added together, 133.3 against the 130.8 of the direct.

Two and a half more in distance, but two flights with a stop in between, or else a ground transfer along the north coast plus a flight.

It is the same logic as Bocas del Toro–San Blas and San Pedro–Placencia: the difference is not in the air, it is in the day. The direct exists to remove the stop, not to shorten the journey.

When it works and when it does not

It works when you arrive on an international flight the same day and want to be on the island before dark. Guanaja operates in a daylight window, and a badly fitted connection costs you a night on the mainland.

It does not if your plan includes days in La Ceiba or on the north coast anyway. Then the short leg from there is cheaper and you lose nothing.

And if your destination is Roatán, this route is probably unnecessary: there are direct scheduled flights from San Pedro Sula, 96.1 nautical miles away.

Guanaja is still the exception

We repeat it because it underpins every route to this island: Guanaja has neither Roatán's scheduled service nor Utila's ferry.

It is the worst connected of the three, and that makes it the only one in the archipelago where the charter competes with nothing: it enables the trip.

The interval between diving and flying

Almost all traffic to Guanaja is diving, and there a physiological constraint governs: there is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying.

Practical consequence: the return day is not a diving day, and with an international connection waiting in San Pedro Sula the margin should be taken generously. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.

Frequently asked questions

How long is San Pedro Sula to Guanaja?

The flight covers 130.8 nautical miles. It is a single hop from the busiest airport in Honduras.

Is it not better via La Ceiba?

In distance that is 133.3 nautical miles added against 130.8 direct. But it is two flights with a stop, or a ground transfer plus a flight.

When is the direct worth it?

When you arrive on an international flight the same day and want to be on the island before dark. Guanaja operates in a daylight window.

What if my destination is Roatán?

Then this route is probably unnecessary: there are direct scheduled flights from San Pedro Sula, 96.1 nautical miles away.

Why does Guanaja need a charter?

Because it has neither Roatán's scheduled service nor Utila's ferry. It is the worst connected of the three islands.

Can I dive on the return day?

No. There is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying, and with an international connection the margin should be generous. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
