A private charter to Tortuguero (TTQ) costs from 895 USD for the whole aircraft, not per passenger. It is one of the closest destinations to the Central Valley — a little over fifty nautical miles — and the fare reflects that. Here is what makes it up.
Quoted per aircraft, not per seat
The fare covers the entire aircraft and does not change whether two people travel or all 4 seats are filled. Cost per person falls directly as the group grows.
That matters particularly at Tortuguero, because it is a destination people reach as a family or in a small nature group: the same flight split among four or five produces a per-head figure quite unlike the first impression.
Variable 1: the origin
Tortuguero sits on Costa Rica's northern Caribbean coast, in Limón Province, and is surprisingly close to the Central Valley in a straight line.
| Origin | Distance | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tobías Bolaños (SYQ) | 52.1 NM · 96 km | The shortest |
| Juan Santamaría (SJO) | 53.4 NM · 99 km | Effectively the same |
| Liberia (LIR) | 119.8 NM · 222 km | More than double |
Between the two San José airports the air difference is under two nautical miles: the choice is ground logistics, not price. From Liberia, however, the jump is substantial.

Variable 2: the aircraft and the runway
Tortuguero's runway is 02/20, 950 metres by 12 wide, asphalt, at 25 metres elevation.
Nine hundred and fifty metres gives slightly more margin than Drake Bay's 750, but twelve metres of width is still a narrow strip. The field is reserved for high-wing turboprops and crews familiar with it, which limits aircraft options and with them the pricing latitude.

Variable 3: the date, and a Caribbean warning
Tortuguero is on the Caribbean side, and this is the point that wrecks the most itineraries.
The rainfall pattern of the Costa Rican Caribbean does not match the Pacific. Months that are dry in Guanacaste are not necessarily dry here, and September and October — peak rain on the Pacific — tend to be among the most settled on the Caribbean. If your trip combines both coasts, the good window for one is not the good window for the other.
That does not change the fare, but it does change availability and rescheduling risk: Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
The alternative: boat from La Pavona or Moín
The usual access to Tortuguero is by water. You drive to a landing — La Pavona or Moín, depending on the route — and continue by boat through the canals to the village. There is no road access to Tortuguero itself.
It is a journey that forms part of the experience and that many people enjoy: the canals are the attraction. But it absorbs most of the day between road and water, and it depends on boat schedules the passenger does not control.
On the transfer from the Tortuguero strip to the lodges: Access to the lodges is by river and has a last departure of the day that sets your flight time.
Empty legs
When a repositioning sector coincides with your route and date, the fare can drop noticeably. They cannot be planned in advance and allow no schedule changes: they suit flexible dates. We work with empty legs: they arise from operations already confirmed, are listed at short notice and are not guaranteed. Ask us what is available that day.
What the fare does not include
It covers the flight. We do not quote third-party services: lodges, canal tours, Tortuguero National Park entry, guides or meals. Most lodges arrange pickup; confirm with your accommodation.
