Belize City has two airports, and the difference is measured on the ground
Like San José in Costa Rica, Belize City operates with two fields, and choosing well saves time.
Philip S. W. Goldson (BZE), in Ladyville, is the country's only international airport. If you arrive on an international flight, you land here.
Sir Barry Bowen Municipal (TZA) sits barely a mile from the centre of Belize City, considerably more central than the international airport, at eight feet above sea level. Its main function is precisely this one: serving the cayes, offering faster passage than boat or water taxi.
The practical rule is the familiar one: if you are connecting from an international flight the same day, BZE avoids an inter-airport transfer. If you are already staying in the city, TZA is much closer. In the air the difference is under four nautical miles.
Our departure base in Belize: The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
We'll confirm whether TZA or BZE suits you better
Caye Caulker Airport (CUK)
Caye Caulker lies twenty kilometres off the Belize coast, and its airport sits at two feet above sea level — effectively a strip at water level.
It has a recent history worth knowing, because it explains its current state. In 2017, Maya Island Air and Tropic Air suspended service to the caye because of the dangerous condition of the runway. The airport then underwent a full renovation that included asphalt pavement and runway lighting, and service was restored.
It now takes scheduled flights from Maya Island Air and Tropic Air out of Belize City–International, Belize City–Municipal and San Pedro.
On confirmed weather-related closures: Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
Flying versus the water taxi
This is the route where the sea alternative is most competitive in the whole network, and it deserves to be said plainly.
The water taxi to Caye Caulker works well, runs frequently and is part of the experience for many travellers. If you are packing light, not in a hurry and the weather is good, it is a perfectly reasonable choice.
The flight wins in three situations: tight international connections where every hour counts, groups with bulky luggage or dive gear, and rough seas. Sixteen nautical miles is minutes in the air against a crossing that stops being pleasant once there is swell.
