Osa is where a private flight stops being a convenience and becomes the sensible way to arrive. It is also the destination with the most demanding runway in our entire network. The two facts are related. On request per aircraft.
A thousand metres by eighteen
The Drake Bay runway is 09/27, 750 metres long by 11 wide.
Eleven metres. It is the severest restriction in the Central American catalogue — narrower than Guanaja, shorter than Arenal — and it is the reason Osa is still what it is.
That figure is not trivia: it determines which aircraft gets in, how much baggage fits, and what margin there is against the weather. Everything else about this trip organises itself around it. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The distances, and what they replace
| Origin | Distance to Drake Bay |
|---|---|
| San José (SJO) | 83.5 NM · 155 km |
| La Fortuna / Arenal (FON) | 118.8 NM · 220 km |
| Liberia (LIR) | 159.2 NM · 295 km |
Liberia–Drake Bay is the longest domestic leg in Costa Rica across our network. And by road, that same journey is a full day: the overland route to Osa combines a long drive, unpaved sections depending on the area, and, for many lodges, a final leg by boat.
We are not comparing a flight against a comfortable transfer here. We are comparing half an hour in the air against a day of travel that also consumes the following day in recovery.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Landing is not arriving
It is what surprises first-time Osa travellers most. Drake Bay is a point of arrival, not a final destination.
Many of the peninsula's lodges lie outside the village, and the final leg runs by dirt track or by boat depending on where you stay. That leg is normally coordinated by the lodge and is not our service.
Our coordination policy with Osa lodges: Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
The consequence for your booking: confirm the lodge and its transfer before fixing the flight time. It is the same pattern as Islas Secas in Panama, for the same reason: when access is chained, the link that breaks is rarely the air one.
Daylight window and weather
Drake Bay operates in a daylight window. With 750 metres of runway in a high-rainfall area, the margin is thinner than at any other field in the network.
The practical reading: schedule with slack and avoid the last flight of the day if your plan depends on arriving. Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
Corcovado, and what we do not quote
The park has its own access rules, quotas and mandatory guides. We do not quote entry, guides or lodging, because they are not our services and you are better off contracting them with whoever operates them.
What we do solve is getting into and out of the peninsula with your day intact.
At Corcovado that is worth more than elsewhere: quotas are allocated for a specific day. Lose your arrival day on the road and you may lose your booked park access too, and that does not reschedule easily.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Drake Bay runway like?
It is 09/27, 750 metres by 11 wide. It is the severest restriction in the network and determines the aircraft, the baggage and the weather margin.
How long does it take from San José?
The flight covers 83.5 nautical miles. By road the same journey is a full day, with unpaved sections and often a final boat leg.
Do I land at the lodge?
No. Drake Bay is a point of arrival. The final leg to your lodge runs by land or boat and is normally coordinated by the lodge. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
What should I book first, the flight or the lodge?
The lodge and its transfer. When access is chained, the link that breaks is rarely the air one.
Is there weather risk?
It is a high-rainfall area and the runway operates in a daylight window on 750 metres. Schedule with slack and avoid the last flight of the day. Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
Do you include Corcovado entry and guides?
No. The park has quotas and mandatory guides under its own rules, and they are not our services.
