Panama has two coasts with swell and opposite seasons, and that shapes the whole trip before flights come into it. This page explains how it is planned. On request per aircraft.
Two oceans, two seasons
It is the peculiarity Panama shares with neither Costa Rica nor Nicaragua.
The Pacific — Azuero, Santa Catalina — takes southern swell in one half of the year. The Caribbean — Bocas del Toro — works on northern swell in the other.
The practical consequence: this is not a country where you run both coasts on the same trip looking for waves. You pick one according to the date, and plan the transfer towards it.
Anyone attempting both usually finds one working and the other flat.
That sets Panama apart from its neighbours: in Costa Rica and Nicaragua the surf destinations sit largely on one coast and the season is the variable. Here the coast itself is.
The three destinations, and how they are reached
| Destination | From Albrook | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Isla Contadora | 37.2 NM | Calm beach, not a wave destination |
| Pedasí / Playa Venao | 89.5 NM | Pacific, Azuero tip |
| Bocas del Toro | 161.3 NM | Caribbean, archipelago |
Boards travel according to the assigned category’s available volume: tell us the number and dimensions when requesting the quote.
Azuero: you buy time, not access
Pedasí is eighty-nine point five nautical miles from Albrook, and by road it is roughly five hours on well-maintained roads.
Worth saying plainly: the flight does not solve a difficult access here. It turns a day of transfer into a morning, which on a one-week trip is a notable fraction, and on a three-week one much less so.
With a group and boards the arithmetic changes: the fare is per aircraft, and six people split what two do not.
From the airport to Playa Venao there is also a ground transfer we do not operate. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
Bocas: here the flight changes category
One hundred and sixty-one point three nautical miles to the Caribbean, crossing the country.
Overland the run is long and ends in a sea leg out to the archipelago. It is not a question of hours saved but of a chain of transfers, and that is the real difference: in a chain, one missed link is enough for none of the following ones to fit.
If your trip falls in the Caribbean season, this is where the charter returns most in all of Panama.
The boards decide the aircraft
And this holds on all three coasts.
Surf baggage is what most often forces a step up in category without the client expecting it. Bags are long and do not always fit the category that would match the passenger count. Boards travel according to the assigned category’s available volume: tell us the number and dimensions when requesting the quote.
Say it in the first message: number of boards and length of the bags. It is the detail that changes the quote most on this kind of trip, more than distance.
What we would recommend
If you travel in Pacific season with time: drive to Azuero. The road works and the flight buys hours, not access.
If you travel in a group with boards: fly, on either coast. The split changes the arithmetic entirely.
If your season is the Caribbean: fly to Bocas. That is where the charter replaces a chain rather than a road.
Frequently asked questions
Can both coasts be surfed on one trip?
Not in good conditions. The Pacific takes southern swell in one half of the year and the Caribbean northern swell in the other. You pick one by date.
Is flying to Azuero worth it?
It depends. It is five hours on well-maintained road: the flight buys time, not access. With a group and boards, the arithmetic changes.
And to Bocas del Toro?
There, yes. Overland it is a long run ending in a sea leg: the flight replaces a chain of transfers, not a road.
What should I say when requesting a quote?
Number of boards and length of the bags. It is what changes the quote most, more than distance. Boards travel according to the assigned category’s available volume: tell us the number and dimensions when requesting the quote.
Do I land at Playa Venao?
No. There is a ground transfer from the Pedasí airport that we do not operate. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
Is Contadora a surf destination?
No. It is 37.2 nautical miles from Albrook and it is calm beach, not a wave destination.
