Baggage by category: volume before weight

Boards and dive gear fill the compartment before the scale. This is the conversation worth having before you book.

The question is almost always asked in kilograms. The problem is almost always volume.

Why weight misleads

A two-and-a-half-metre surfboard in a padded travel bag weighs very little. It takes up an enormous amount of space, and in a compartment with a particular geometry it can stop anything else going in.

A full set of dive gear weighs more, but splits into manageable pieces. Six sets, on the other hand, fill a mid-category compartment entirely — and dive travellers rarely travel alone.

The scale is rarely what fails. The geometry is: the compartment has a specific shape, and one long rigid item does not stow like four soft bags of the same weight.

The three cases that complicate most

Surfboards. Guanacaste is surf country: Tamarindo 97.1 nautical miles from San José, Nosara 85.6. Boards travel well but they drive the category and sometimes the passenger count, which is not the trade-off most people expect to make. Boards travel according to the assigned category’s available volume: tell us the number and dimensions when requesting the quote.

Group dive gear. Roatán is 96.1 nautical miles from San Pedro Sula and Utila 24.0 from Roatán. A group of six with full kit changes the category required.

And one detail that is not about baggage but arrives in the same conversation: an interval has to pass between the last dive and flying. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.

Car seats, pushchairs and child equipment. With small children the volume rises more than the weight suggests, and the pieces are awkwardly shaped. It is the case that most often forces a category change at the last minute, and the one clients least anticipate.

What takes up more than it seems

A short list, in case it helps you review your baggage before enquiring:

  • Surfboards, paddleboards and kitesurf gear
  • Golf bags
  • Full dive kits, especially with a drysuit
  • Car seats and pushchairs
  • Hard cases for photographic or film equipment
  • Rods and fishing tackle, if you are heading to Barra del Colorado or Tortuguero

How to ask so the answer is useful

In pieces and dimensions, not kilos. "Two boards of two-seventy and four suitcases" is a question that can be answered; "about eighty kilos" is not.

And say it when requesting the quote, not afterwards. Baggage can change the category, and changing the category changes the price. Finding out on the day of the flight is the worst outcome for everyone, and it is entirely avoidable with one sentence up front. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

What sometimes solves it

Renting at destination. Tamarindo, Nosara and Roatán all have board and dive gear rental. It does not always pay, and serious surfers rarely want to be parted from their own boards — but the sum is worth doing: sometimes renting two boards costs less than moving up a category.

Or splitting the baggage between the outbound and the return, if the itinerary allows and there is somewhere safe to leave it in between.

Neither is a universal answer, but both get raised too rarely and sometimes they resolve it.

Frequently asked questions

What limits more, weight or volume?

Volume, almost always. The scale is rarely what fails; the compartment geometry is.

Can I bring surfboards?

Yes, but they drive the category and sometimes the passenger count. Say so when quoting. Boards travel according to the assigned category’s available volume: tell us the number and dimensions when requesting the quote.

And dive gear for a group?

Six full sets fill a mid-category compartment entirely.

How should I ask?

In pieces and dimensions, not kilos. "Two boards of two-seventy and four suitcases" can be answered.

When should I mention it?

When requesting the quote, not afterwards. Baggage can change the category, and the category changes the price.

What else takes up a lot?

Golf bags, car seats, pushchairs, hard cases for camera equipment and fishing tackle.

Is there an alternative to carrying everything?

Renting at destination. Sometimes renting two boards costs less than moving up a category.
