In this direction most passengers are not relocating to Guatemala: they are staying on Ambergris, Caye Caulker or Placencia, they want to see Tikal, and they want to sleep where they already are. The real question is not how long the trip takes but whether it fits in a day.

Why nobody does it by road
The overland alternative leaves Belize City on the Western Highway to the Melchor de Mencos border, with formalities on both sides, and continues across the Petén to Flores. Then comes the transfer from Flores to Tikal.
That is a full day one way. Add the return and a Tikal excursion from the Belize coast becomes a two-night trip at minimum, with accommodation in Flores. Entirely reasonable if you want to see the Petén; excessive if the objective is the ruins.
The two departure airports
Philip S. W. Goldson (BZE), in Ladyville, is Belize's only international airport. On a flight to Guatemala it is the natural origin: it is where departure formalities happen.
Sir Barry Bowen Municipal (TZA), a mile from the centre, is a domestic field. If you are coming from the cayes — the usual case on this route — the normal pattern is to connect through BZE.

Mundo Maya Airport (FRS)
In Santa Elena, city of Flores, Petén Department, at 387 feet elevation. It is Guatemala's second busiest airport, with 186,324 passengers in 2022, and it has the longest runway in the country. It serves Flores, Santa Elena and San Benito along with Tikal and Yaxhá.
Its ICAO identifier changed from MGTK to MGMM in 2012; references using the old code are still in circulation.
