Ruins and reef on the same trip

Tikal and the Belize Barrier Reef are two of the region's headline attractions, and they sit reasonably close: under a hundred nautical miles separate the Flores airport from Belize City's.

In practice, though, combining them has historically been awkward. The overland route crosses the Petén to the Melchor de Mencos border, with formalities on both sides, then continues on the Western Highway to Belize City. It is a travel day, and the road on the Guatemalan side is not in the same condition year-round.

The flight turns that day into under an hour in the air. On a ten-day itinerary that wants Tikal and then Ambergris or Caye Caulker, this leg is the difference between a comfortable circuit and a forced one.

We handle departure and entry formalities

Mundo Maya Airport (FRS)

It sits in Santa Elena, in the city of Flores, Petén Department, at 387 feet elevation. Military and public, operated by Guatemala's Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil, it serves Flores, Santa Elena and San Benito along with the Maya sites of Tikal and Yaxhá.

It is Guatemala's second busiest airport, with 186,324 passengers in 2022, and it has the longest runway in the country. That makes it, technically, one of the more comfortable fields in the whole network despite sitting in the middle of the Petén jungle.

One note for anyone checking older documentation: its ICAO identifier changed from MGTK to MGMM in 2012. References using the old code are still in circulation.

On confirmed weather-related closures: Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.

In Belize, the airport decision again

As on the Caye Caulker route, Belize City has two fields and the choice depends on what you do next.

Philip S. W. Goldson (BZE), in Ladyville, is the country's only international airport. On a flight from Guatemala it is the natural destination: it is where entry formalities happen.

Sir Barry Bowen Municipal (TZA) is a mile from the centre and serves the cayes, but it is a domestic field. If your final destination is Caye Caulker or Ambergris, the usual pattern is to clear in at BZE and continue from there.

Immigration and customs

International flight between Guatemala and Belize: there is departure and entry, with formalities at both ends. Documentation requirements, flight plan filing deadlines, fees and service hours: Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details.
